ASCII character input

I have XP and Word 2007. I am trying to use ASCII characters to write a
spanish translation after my english. I did what help said
"If you know the keystroke value of the special character you want to
insert, you can insert the special character directly into your document by
using your keyboard. To do so, open the document and position the cursor
where you want the special character to appear. Then, with NUM LOCK on, press
and hold the ALT key, and then press the keys on the numeric keypad that
represent the keystroke value of the character you want to input. After you
finish typing, release the ALT key, and Windows generates the character you
specified."
It did not work, but did on my other computer with an older version of word.
The alt key and a number triggers a selection in the Word menus.
ANy suggestions?

After you've activated NumLock, what happens when you press a key on the
numeric keypad? The numeric keypad is the set of digits located on the
right-hand side of your keyboard.

I hope you find the issue. I just tried word 2007 and have your same
issue. You used to be able to type ALT+233 and get ascii character
233. I've not been able to do this in years. It was so simple back
in Win9x but its been years since I needed those characters anyway.
For the few times I need them, I use the character map. Its a bit
awkward for more than 10 characters but it still works.

Have you tried using a four-digit ANSI code, e.g. Alt-0241(ñ)? If you
are using a laptop, you might have to press and hold a function key to
work the number keypad.

Works on mine. Alt+233 yields ? while Alt+0233 yields é

I have a laptop and don't have a keypad. It doesn't work. Even holding
the Fn key down to get the numbers does not work.
Tried it on the desktop with a std keyboard and the keypad #s work.
#'s over the letters don't. Odd twist!

Laptops use a special key sequence to put the keyboard into NumLock mode. On
mine it is Fn+ScrLk. Read the manual that came with your laptop if you
cannot work out what it is on your machine.

This is how it works in my labtop

For my HP Pavilion 15" screen labtop (hence no numeric keyboard) here is how I got it to work

Steps
1) Know your ALT+xxxx code from Character Map (Start->Programs->Accesories->System Tools-> Character map).
In my case, I use Spanish so for ñ it would be ALT+0241 or ALT+164.

2) Numeric Keyboard in my labtop keyboard is located on the M,J,K,L,U,I,O,P,8,9,0 keys and activated by pressing the function (FN) key and the ALT key and typing the above keys.

Notice the FN key has a square around the FN letters. The keys mentioned above have numbers as well in squares beside them. That is how you know which ones are represented from the numeric keypad in a full keyboard.

3) Make sure to have NUM LK off (which is counter to what some ppl are suggesting....this is what works for me)

4) So to get the ñ, I would press and hold FN key and ALT key, then press M,K,U,J (which represent 0241 for the numeric keypad in the labtop) and you get the ñ.

Caveat:
When I did this it made Firefox skip back to previous page . Probably need to reprogram shortcuts in Firefox. Works ok on word processors.
Also ALT+164 (or rather FN+ALT then J,O,U) would work just as well as ALT+0241

Hope this helps
