Changing Default Colors in MS Graph

Argh, I'm pulling my hair out! So, I successfully change the default
swatches in MS Graph so I can have my bar chart use custom colors.
Then, as soon as I double-click the graph to edit the info, the colors
and swatch pallette immediately revert to default colors. The only way
to keep the colors, it seems, is to ungroup the chart objects. Am I
doing something wrong?
