cd rom/dvd both shut down drivers?

my cd rom/burner and dvd player both shut down at the
same time
says the drivers are either missing or corrupted
xp won't let me delete the drivers so that i can
reload them from my disc
how do i figure out what corrupted them in the first place
and how do a change them out?

This may not fix your immediate problem, but I'd first
make sure the CD ROM drives are working. Create a boot
disk with DOS cd drivers and make sure you can read the
CDs from the command prompt.

Then, at least, you'll know it's a software problem and
not a hardware one.

To make a boot disk and are running Windows XP (DOS/FAT
is fine, since you won't need to see the HDD at this
point), make sure a floppy is in your floppy drive, open
My Computer, right-click on the Floppy drive (probably
A:), select Format, then select "Creat an MS-DOS Startup
Disk".

If you DO need to get to the HDD on a NTFS HDD:

If you need to get to an NTFS HDD often, you might want
to consider Winternals NTFSDOS Professional.
