I AM TRYING TO REPAIR WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION BUT I CANNOT GET PAST ENTER
CORRECT PRODUCT ID. THE SETUP GETS THROUGH INSTALLING DEVICES AND THEN STOPS
ASKING FOR A VALID CD KEY. I GOT A NEW PRODUCT ID FROM MICROSOFT BUT I STILL
GET THE SAME CD KEY NOT VALID MESSAGE. MY COMPUTER WAS WORKING OK BEFORE I
STARTED THE REPAIR BUT SAID IT WAS UNSTABLE DUE TO DIRECT CD. NOW I CANNOT
GET THE SETUP TO FINISH AND I CANNOT USE MY COMPUTER. ANY SUGGESTIONS.

First of all, please unstick your CapsLock key. Posting in all
caps, as you have done, is the Usenet equivalent of shouting, and is
considered very rude. More importantly, posting in all caps makes the
post very hard to read, further reducing your chances of getting help.

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5,"
or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense
to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation.
Also, be sure that your <CapsLock> is _off_ while entering the
Product Key -- this isn't supposed to make a difference, but I've seen
it do so.

Well, Thank you for your response. i guess you were able to read my post ok.
This was my first post so i guess i don't know the correct procedure. i
have to write in all caps for my mother to read my email messages. Funny
that you can't read it. She is almost 80.
I had already read that knowledge based article and have made sure that i
put the right numbers in. i will try to take off the caps when i try it
again. I also used the numbers pad instead of the numbers at the top of the
keyboard. Do you know how to stop the setup without putting in a cd key? I
can'd find any articles about that.

Type normally for all, but when you send e-mail to your mother, increase the
size of the font..

Then you should learn before posting. Are you allowed to drive a car without
learning how? No you are not, so why should Usenet be any different?!

Why? Because you're too stupid and/or lazy to change the font point size?!
All caps is incredibly rude and makes emails and usenet posts very hard to
read.

Funny that you can't read it.

Not can't. Won't. When you can learn to post like a civilised human being,
we'll read your posts. Until then, take your yelling someplace else. It
isn't welcome here.

She is almost 80.

Well bully for her. Shame she bred such an ill-mannered, illiterate,
jerkwad. She must be rueing every day that she didn't have an abortion.

A little OTT don't you think?

The guy is now writing in lower case. It is his first time and where is he
going to find a driving manual for posting on newsgroups?

However your opinion is yours and you have a right to air it. Hopefully you
aren't too upset by this post.

Dave.

I wonder if the OP would write a letter to a prospective employer in upper
case only, just in case they had trouble with small print?.. I doubt it,
somehow..

Bruce thank you for your suggestions and forgive my ignorance of the usernet
forms. i very carefully typed in the cd key again and even got a new one
from microsoft but it will not accept it and it will not let me stop the
setup process. my friend's cdr drive was not working and she got a message
that says the direct cd is not compatible with windows xp home and when i
tried to repair the installation i got in this mess. i am just trying to
help out a friend. i also did not realize these posts had become so full of
obnoxious people who like to correct everyone. you were nice enough to tell
me i was wrong and then to try to answer my question.

Bruce commented on the type style and gave you the only help available in
real terms.. the rest of us have passed comment between ourselves.. as you
are not fully in the newsgroup way, you will notice that we haven't been
directly answering you, and this is shown by the appearance of the
threading..

Hope this is of help to you..

First congrats on the Sox.

Sorry, for you bad luck here. You didn't know?

These groups tend to be in a state of denial---Especially the XP groups.
Clearly you have failed to accept the premise that "the fault is not
with MS or XP"

There are several manifestations of the denial.

After taking the oath, one is provided with several answers: (also known
as strawmen, excuses or puffery) "That is not supposed to happen." Or
various versions.

Close, is "That has never happened to *me* and, I,
A. Service 300,000 XP desktops at work.
B. I only have 23 desktops and 16 laptops for home use and install and
uninstall XP daily
C. It is not SP2, That is an unresolved issue with SP2, Over five
hundred million people have installed SP2 without SP2 ****ing up, You
are using third party software (not MS)
D. It's your fault because _______.

Pure laziness will lead some to point you to Microsoft.com Oh, you
didn't know MS has a website?

They will provide an address for a 1,000 word Knowledge Base article
which often ends with......... a link to another article, and you guesed
it, all articles have an escape hatch which will lead you to another
article.
Articles are sprinkled with solutions that are "not supported by MS" or
proceedures that require you to backup your drive, get the kids out of
the house and increase your liability on your homeowners policy

Sadly, it is not grasped that rarely does one know about Usenet and not
know about the Internet. Ergo, a visitor here has already been there.
Worse? A paragraph or two can provide a summary of several Microsoft.com
solutions. It is easier to throw a hyperlink than to solve your problem.

Easier yet to blame you and any nitwit can come up with an insult. Help?
Not here.

Why insult a poster?
You are at wits end, and so after days of following proceedures or
spending time on the phone with support? It may come through in your
post. You are frustrated. No, that is not understood and since an
answer is not at hand, your "mood" will be attacked--- your problem
remains unsolved.

Lastly, someone (often through *top posting*), which simply means
responding to you at the top of your post which is a primary Usenet no,
no, will attack you for not following Usenet etiquette. Pot/Kettle?

Spelling, grammer and a close relative, punctuation are all fair game
when an answer is unavailable. Notice to see if the critic is top
posting the attack.
microsoft.public.* is populated by the highest percentage of Usenet
idiots as any group I've seen. Go ahead and count the Usente violtions
here.
For many, there is no Usenet outside of microsoft.public.*

I can name a score of Usenet groups where this cabal would be lunch.

No, it is not likely a problem that cannot be solved with a Google
Internet search will be solved here. No, I do not claim answers are not
given. However, posting here offers no advanatage over a savy Internet
search.

Careful, an Internet search may reveal a critical evaluation of MS.
Outside of these groups people actually remain objective.

Some talented people will not "take the oath", but offer solutions not
found here or provide solutions "not supported" by MS. However, you
*will* have solved your problem.

Mike Hall? He's a toady, suck up and wishes to curry favor. He will
defend anyone in order to not be called out by them. He comes out of
nowhere to ambush. Along with many here? He learned if you can't join
'em, suck up to them.

No, your problem may not fit their answer sheet. Go back to the
Internet, you may not find a solution as there *is* a problem with the
code. A CD key not working? Gotta be your fault. Several not working?

Look at the bright side. Your team is in the World Series! Almost as
good, the Yankees are not.

With a little more luck? For the rest of your life you will remember one
thing about '04. I doubt if it will be your MS problem. The treatment
you received here or my note to you---it will all fade. None of it will
last till the new year.

Again, congrats. Don't sweat the small stuff. No, the ill treatment to
you doesn't get any smaller.

And when you find an answer on your own. Do return, and throw it in
their wise assed faces.
