catch-up

What does the command "catch up" do ? After I apply it, I notice that all
of my newsgroup message headers are not longer in bold -- as if I had read
them -- which is not desirable.

It marks all messages as read, even those still on the server.

Not at all. Sometimes I want to join a new newsgroup but I don't have
time to read all the existing (older) messages, so that is where Catch Up
comes in.

That sounds completely useless to me.

Not sure I get it. If you didn't read them, why would you want to mark them
as read ? So that you know which messages are new ?

Yes, and then by selecting "Hide Read Messages" I no longer have to
stare at thousands of old posts that I have no time to read.
