Catchup Issues

When right clicking and then selecting "catch-up" it takes forever sometimes
to correctly catch-up all mail listed. Also, sometimes after doing so and
then shutting down and reopening, one of the subscribed accounts does not
have all the mail previously marked as "read" still so. In other words,
they are bolded .

Why?

This is quite different from Outlook Express.

Catch Up isn't available for mail, so I'll assume that you're asking about
newsgroups.
It only affects the selected newsgroup and is not available on the server
level as far as I can see.

Yes, newsgroup messages. Sorry, I posted in the wrong place initially and
have duplicates.

By right clicking on the newsgroup and selecting "catch-up". About one-half
of the time it pops up a dialog box that says "catching up with selected
newsgroup" and it has a thermometer bar that is about 90%
complete--sometimes it quickly fills from left to right and then stops at
90% complete or thereabouts. Shortly after, it indicates that Windows mail
is "not responding" and sometimes it takes 2-4 minutes before it finishes
and turns all bolded items to normal font, hence "catching up."

Then I can close Windows mail, and reopen and if I selected five separate
newsgroups to catch-up, one at a time in the previous process, at least one
of those will show bolded items that did not "register" as caught up even
though they had turned non-bold during previous process. It is like the
program is forgetting what it just caught up with.

Actually I often do this after "synchronizing all newsgroups" and I download
both headers and messages in that process.

The worst part is that when waiting for the program to respond, no actions
are possible for 2-4 minutes on that program. I can still work with other
programs.

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.

As of recently Trend is known to cause problems.
Replace Trend with the free AVG http://free.grisoft.com/ or Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender. Disabling Trend is not enough. You need to completely uninstall
it.
