Card reader won't transfer pics

Using XP Home and a USB card reader. Reader installs
properly, shows up as 4 drives. I insert the SD card and
it launches the wizard but windows tells me it can't
transfer the files and I should use Explore (which I
wanted to do anyway.) Bottom line is, windows doesn't
see the files on the card. They are in JPG format. Any
ideas here? Thanks.

Have you tried the other way? Insert your card first in the card reader and
then connect your card reader.

I just tried that but it still doesn't work. Same
results. "insert card in drive H". I insert the card,
it reads it, but it doesn't show any files. any other
ideas?

Probably something you already tried but
what happens if you go to...My Computer...
and...one at the time...right click all 4 of the
drives that the reader created...and choose
Open? Maybe one of them will be correct
for the SD card.

Also if you have an image editing program
....open it and go to...File / Open...and see if
you can view the image files by choosing the
correct drive in the "Look In" drop window.

When it reads it, it should not show any files. Rather it should show a
yellow icon for a folder. Does it show this? You just click on this yellow
icon to open it and then your files will show.
If the above does not happen, tell us what happens.
"It reads it", OK, then what? Nothing? A message? Just hangs? Are you sure
you have pictures on this card (you can view them on your camera LCD)?
If you click on My Computer to open it and you see your card reader under
"Devices with Removable Storage" and you see the 4 drives that your card
reader is available to display, are you selecting the proper one?

John, I tried to access the card through the drives.
Actually, that is how it's supposed to be done. No joy
there. Tried going in through Paint shop pro but the
same results........thanks

Yves, it has been showing 2 folder icons. DCIM and MISC
on drive H. But it will disappear in about 10 seconds.
If I click on either of them, i get another box telling
me to insert disk into drive H. But out of about 50
times trying that, one time another box launched with
another folder inside it. The folder was "100HPIMG".
But there was nothing in that folder. And that only
happened once. Yes, there are pictures on the card. and
I have tried another card also. I also can see the
drives in Device manager as disk drives, USB. The
properties say that they are working properly. If I
launch the Scanner and Camera Wizard, this is the box I
see next: The Scanner and Camera Wizard cannot operate
on this device because some of its files and folders may
be secured by Windows. To work with pictures on this
device, click Start, click My Computer, and then double-
click the device... of course this doesn't work either.
I am positive of selecting the right "device with
removable storage". I've tried them all anyway. Also,
when I am told to insert a card in drive H, I often get a
box called "autoplay" showing the flashlight searching
for files. But it never finds any and times out. Any
other ideas? BTW, don't know if I mentioned it's the
second reader also. Hi Speed USB plugged into the proper
USB connection, not a hub. ....thanks for your time on
this..

Well, I certainly have no clue what the problem
is...I'm just thinking out loud.

But now I'm wondering if you have an SD card
that does not contain any files or if you have a
bad SD card. Also...the slot in the reader may
not be making proper contact. Would it be possible
to try this card in a different computer/reader?

Is there a ghost of a chance that these KB
articles would address this problem?

John, good try. I have used 2 different cards and 2
different readers. the card has files on it, I can see
them in the camera. And unload them through the camera.
I have already tried the MS KB articles you suggested.
But you did come up with a new one: I will take the
reader to a friend's computer and see if it will work on
another PC. I will get back on this.....thanks.

It looks to me like you have tried everything possible except John Inzer's
suggestion to try to see if this reader will work on another computer.
I just received feedback fromWolfP that he repaired his CF card reader using
steps I to V described below.
Give this a try.

Different ways to try to repair the Autoplay window for downloading from
either a camera or card reader.

Go from steps I to V, although step V may not be needed.

I. Connect your camera to your computer, power it on and make sure you have
pictures on your memory card. Make sure your batteries are good or better
yet, use your AC adapter if your camera came with one. If you are trying
with a card reader, just connect it with a memory card inserted and with
pictures on the memory card.

II. Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press Enter
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...
This will take a few seconds to run.

III. Go to the following site:
http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/autofix.exe

and download the autofix.exe file in one of your folder. Once done, double
click on this file. A window will open. Follow the directions on the screen.

Once done, turn off the camera and reboot.

IV. Power the camera on, wait 10-15 seconds for XP to recognize it, you
should hear some beeping sound and the window should now open giving you the
option of downloading photos from the camera.

V. You may have to set the options for this window.
Click on My Computer, your camera should be listed there under Devices with
Removable Storage. Right click on it and click on Properties. In the opening
window, click on the Autoplay tab and under Select, scroll to Pictures to
select it. Select the button Prompt me...

Here are previous fixes at the Microsoft FAQ page.

Go this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/faq/default.asp

Fourth item from the top of the page. Two fixes are presented. One is to
edit the registry, the second one is to download Tweak UI and do the repair
with it. If you are comfortable editing the registry, go ahead.

If not, download Tweak UI.

Once you download the Tweak UI file in one of your folders, double click on
it to install it.

Once this is done, click on Start and click on All Programs. Look for Power
Toys for Windows XP. Click on it and Tweak UI will be listed. Click on it to
get is started.

A window will open. Click on the + sign next to My Computer, then click on
the + sign next to Autoplay. Then, click on Types. Check the boxes for
Autoplay Drive Types and click OK.

Here is another solution from Roberto Cordero:

Hello all,

I've seen many posts on this topic, and actually I had this same problem.

My Vivitar 3550 camera used to work with the Scanner and Camera Wizard,
until I installed Windows XP Service Pack 1. It wasn't until more than a
year later than I found THE solution.

In the following website they post a solution that (I think) has an error on
it, or something missing:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/faq/default.asp

However, thanks to them for taking me closer to the REAL cause of the
problem and how to solve it. The article tells you to look for a Registry
setting in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

If you followed their instructions, great but we are not done yet. Look for
a similar setting in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explor
er

In my case, the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" value here was a REG_BINARY instead of
a REG_DWORD. If this is your case, you can try these steps:

1. Delete that binary value by highlighting the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" value
and pressing the DEL key.
2. Right-click on that right-pane, select New - DWORD value.
3. Name the New Value as "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"
4. Double-click or press Enter to modify the newly created value.
5. Select the "Decimal" radio button, and then type "145" without the
quotations.
6. Click OK and then close the Registry Editor.
7. Save your work and restart your computer. (Logging off is not enough.)

After the reboot, give your camera a try. Mine brought the Scanner and
Camera Wizard back to life!

Please note: I don't know why that value was binary instead of dword, and if
that was supposed to be the case. However, I can tell you that following the
steps above was the only way I could get the Scanner and Camera Wizard to
work with my camera again. Neither TweakUI nor the FAQ from the Expert Zone
worked for me.

Good luck.

Whoa...do I understand that you can download
the images from the camera via your USB cable?

Maybe the problem is the reader with multiple slots.
Have you tried a reader that has only one slot?

John, it doesn't appear to apply to what I need. And
thanks for the heads up on the Circuit City reader. I
may return this one to CompUSA and get an internal reader
anyway. I will get this thing working
somehow. ....thanks.

John and Yves, Update: I hooked my reader to another
computer that was using XP. Same exact problem. Won't
read my SD card. My friend uses Compact Flash so took
pics with that and the reader read them no problem. It
appears that XP doesn't like SD cards. If I come up with
anything positive, i will add more here........thanks.

Thanks for the update.

I still wonder if a single slot reader
would function differently.

Just wondering, are you running
WinXP SP1a?
