can't use msconfig or regedit

I can't use "msconfig" or"regedit" on my friends computer
that runs windows xp. I had the same problem on mine
running another windows & came on the newsgroup & got the
help I needed. Now the xp computer has the same problem, I
was told b4 that I had a "winlod" virus I got rid of it.
well the same virus is also in the computer running xp. I
have looked for it extensively & cannot find it. I have
renamed regedit & msconfig to mscnfig.com & regedit.com so
I can use them. in the regestry editer I have found &
deletes keys that are involved with this winlod virus but
the problem just reapears. Where does this virus put
itself so that I may get rid of it. On the computer
running windows 98 it was at C\windows\system\ but it is
not here for windows xp. I used the search option under
start & it found nothing even though I used every option
of finding hidden & system files , part & whole names of
the file & it does not find it, but it is there. Does
anyone know how to help this problem? I posted before from
my friends computer & the message didn't get posted.

I havent heard of winlod, there were a few viruses out there that did change
the regedit extensions. Have you tried installing an antivirus on the
machine and running a scan? That might be the best choice right now, or
contact an AV vendor to see if they have a removal tool.

Have you tried using an anti virus program - like Norton, McAfee.

Greetings --

The behavior you've described is typical behavior of more than one
virus/worm, the three below being the most common:
