Can't switch identities

S

Steve Cochran

You can set both up under the same user. Go to Help | View Help and then
search for Identities.

They removed the identities feature.

Steve, I did as you suggested and got the response that "all identities have
already been imported or deleted", but I still cannot switch between the two
identities that I have.

You can add multiple accounts, via Tools - Accounts - Add, but Windows Mail
doesn't have identities or a password option....
Windows Mail puts email from all accounts into the same Inbox, and there's
no setting to change that. When you send a message, you can select which
account to send from, by clicking on the From: box.

Here are a few alternatives to keep your email separate...

1. Create folders for each email account and create message rules to move
email addressed to each account into the appropriate folder.

2. Create and use different Windows Users, each with WM accessing only
their email account. (This is how you set a password to keep other users
out.)

3. Use the newer Windows Live Mail which has separate folders for each
account, but no identities or password:

4. Purchase WMIDs which adds identities to WM
http://www.oehelp.com/WMIDs/Default.aspx

5. Use Windows Mail for one account, Windows Live Mail for another, etc.

So all that is done but Windows mail still does not send 2nd address's mail
into the first account. How does one get them to do that?

What exactly do you mean by "does not send 2nd address's mail into
the first account"?
Mail is not directed into a specific account, it all goes into a common Inbox.

I have 5 email addresses and they are all tied into one? I just got this
computer yesterday with Vista and I don't know anything about it. Does anyone
know how you can seperate the different email addresses? Thank you

Gary VanderMolen

Windows Mail has only one Inbox, so by default, all incoming messages
get dumped into the common Inbox.
There are three different ways to change that:

1. Use message rules to filter incoming messages into
separate folders.

2. Upgrade to Windows Live Mail which has separate folders for each
account, no rules needed: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

3. Purchase an add-on called WMIDs:

I get the info supplied about dealing with multiple accounts in windows mail
but I have one question? When you get to the section in the wizard where it
asks how you want to import? There are 3 choices (Import, Import from
different windows acct or delete accts), but none apply since you won't be
importing from another address, etc. if it removes those messages/settings?
I would be using that address too so I would not want my messages and
settings taken from there. Unless it doesn't take away the messages from
that other account and only copies them for you under the new one that you
are creating as extra account with a different "identity" for lack of better
word. You can't unclick all the tabs and continue so what do you do here in
this case?

My situation is this:
I have changed my default address to a new one (that went fine) and now
trying to add 2 more accounts. Can someone give me some more info on what to
choose to do in the wizard because I want those messages/settings to stay in
my new default address? Thanks.

Importing does not remove anything from the original account.

There is one aspect to watch out for. If you sometimes access a mail
account via the web (webmail), and you want a copy of messages to
stay on the web, then you need to change a default in Windows Mail
BEFORE the first time you allow Windows Mail to download messages
from that account.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Advanced,
enable "Leave a copy of messages on server."

I have the same problem!! How did MS make such a fool decision to start with
.... and call it an upgrade?

G

Gary VanderMolen

Windows Mail does not have identities like Outlook Express did.
By default, all email from all accounts goes into the same Inbox.
There are four different ways of changing that:

1. Use separate Windows user logins. That gives total privacy.

2. Use message rules to filter incoming messages into
separate folders.

3. Upgrade to Windows Live Mail which has separate folders for each
account, no rules needed: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

4. Purchase an add-on called WMIDs:

I am glad to know someone else is having the same problem. I have 3
identities. and I am stumped. I cannot understand why microsoft would do
this unless they have a correction that they can make money on by forcing us
to buy it.

Windows Mail does not include the identities feature. Are you referring to
Outlook Express?

You don't want to try and understand those "thought paths". The decision
was made to remove that feature as MS decided that a feature-rich program
was not what the user wanted.
