can't send mail?

Norton may have corrupted the account while it was still installed.
Recreate that mail account from scratch, then delete the old account.

I too am a BT Broadband customer who cannot send emails using Windows mail
since yesterday morning (24/07/07). As well as my Windows Vista PC I have an
old PC with Windows Xp and Outlook-Express which can send emails. The problem
is obviosly with the BT Smtp servers and nothing to do with Windows Mail or
any Anti-virus software (I am using AVG) and from what I can tell it is quite
frequent for BT to mess up their server settings. I had 6 weeks of being
unable to send emails earlier this year - when I was using Xp . Actually it
would work when I had an IP address in a certain range - but not in other
ranges. The web is littered with thousands of BT customers complaining for
the last year and more, about being unable to send emails, when previously
they have been working fine. My advice would be to leave your PC and all its
software alone - don't change anything, if you can get by using a web mail
service, do so until BT get round to fixing their end. But also send a
complaint or error report to BT support - surely if enough of us tell them
about the same problem they might wake up and do something to fix it.

I have 2 PCs, one with Vista, one with XP, both running Outlook 2003.

The Xp machine can make an smtp connection and send e-mail - the Vista
machine can't!

Have spoken to BT for about 30 minutes just now - they confirm they have a
problem and they are looking into it, although I have zero confidence in the
muppet I spoke to as he seemed to have no knowledge of anything and was
clearly just working from a script. But it does look like a BT problem,
with their smtp servers not accepting connections from Vista PCs for some
reason!

For the record, Norton has never been installed on this PC - the first thing
I did was remove it from the PC and put Zonelabs on, even before I connected
the box to the internet. I've also tried to do this connection with ZL and
Windows firewalls diasabled - it seems not to be a AV/firewall issue!

Well while we wait for the Muppet show to get their act together - you may as
well try the simple solution that various people have supplied on various
threads here - which is to switch you email account - smtp port to use port
587 (instead of 25). It works for me - whilst port 25 remains not working -
and BT continue trying to 'fix' their own problem.

I have the same problem. I have neither Nortons or McAffee, but I am with
BT. I made a complaint to BT on their www.bt.custhelp.com but although I
have had an acknowledgement of the complaint I have had no other reply.

Have you changed your SMTP port to 587?

I have similar problems ie Cant send emails through Windows Mail, have BT
Vista and Mcafee. Initially when problem occurred, I changed port from 25 to
587 (as many have suggested) and all was ok for a day. Now back to square
one ie cant send emails.

There's a good chance (a really good chance) that you've been screwed
by the Vista incompatible crapware that is McAfee.

It needs to be uninstalled entirely and replaced by a tried and tested,
free alternative such as Avast... http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Note. When you install it, omit the email scanning option since
it is superfluous.... http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

I was going to suggest that. I had a similar problem. I changed it back to
25 and then back to 587 and it worked

gary - two error messages as follows -
1 An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C013E
2 Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'btinternet.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Thanks for including the complete error messages. It makes my
troubleshooting job so much easier.

The "Port: 0" portion of the error almost always indicates
interference from an antivirus program.
Windows Mail is incompatible with most McAfee and Norton
antivirus programs. If you are using either of those two, it is
best to uninstall it and replace it with a more compatible
antivirus, such as the free version of Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

After your old antivirus is uninstalled, test your email.
If it still doesn't work, re-create the email account from scratch
because the antivirus has likely corrupted it.

I am new to computers (gasp!) I am also unable to send or delete emails with
windows mail. I have Windows Vista. So here is the dumb question - what do
you mean by BT- that everyone is referring to?

BT is British Telecom, a major ISP (internet service provider) in the UK.

Now.... about your problem.

To help you we need to see the error message and codes.
Also
1. who is your ISP?
2. which anti virus program you have installed?

Windows Mail is notoriously sensitive to AV scanners,
particularly Norton and McAfee.

If you are using either uninstall it entirely and
use a free Vista compatible alternative such as
Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

(don't install the superfluous email scanning component,
see more detail... http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 )

Another factor may be a message stuck in your outbox.

If you have that problem...

Use Dr. Cochrans Elixir....

The following utility, if used in accordance with the
program operating instructions, will free up your outbox
and let you send mail again.
