Can't send mail from Win Mail

I've been using windows mail since buying my new laptop in February. I use
AOL for my mail and have had no problems. Suddenly yesterday I cannot send
mail. I still receive mail sent to my AOL account but cannot send mail from
windows mail, I can still send mail from AOL and when I do it shows up in my
sent mail folder in windows mail. When I try to send mail from windows mail
everything appears normal, I don't get an error message but the message
doesn't appear in the sent items folder nor does the recipient receive it.
Any ideas why this suddenly occurred? I tried using system restore back a
couple of days to when it was working but that didn't help any.

A good place to start problem solving is Anti Virus software.
Are you a McAfee or Norton victim? If so remove it and consider
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html as a substitute.

Aside from the antivirus aspect that Julian mentioned, is it possible
that the emails you attempted to send are now stuck in the Outbox?
Have you looked in the Outbox?

I also have been unsuccessful at figuring out this mess. I have a new notebook with Vista stuff already installed. Windows mail worked beautifully at first and now I have had mucho distaster. I finally got it to RECEIVE but now cannot send. I get this error message Subject '.', Account: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 SIZE 26214400', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D
I am self taught at the computer and I have tried things to no avail. I do
not believe it to be the mcfee service. I tried the other methods that I
have seen so I just don't know. If anyone comes up with the answer, please
let us know... Thanks

What do you know that we don't?

I note you have ignored Gary's question... Have you looked in the Outbox?

Look at the part of the error that says "SIZE 26214400".
This means you are trying to send something that is over 26MB!
Your ISP's mail server does not allow attachments that big.

Next time, please start a new message rather than hijacking an
existing discussion thread. It is too confusing to figure out who
said what.

Is it just me or are their a lot of people posting in the last couple of
days that their windows mail worked fine for the last month but has stopped
sending in the last few days. Is this something caused by some sort of
update by Norton? I too had no problem sending until a couple of days ago.

Actually we've been seeing similar reports for the past 4 months,
people saying WM worked fine for a couple of weeks or months,
and then all of a sudden it fails.
I think it's a matter of a random interaction with incompatible
security programs. Sometimes the glitch happens quickly, and other
times it takes months to show up.

Norton and MacAfee are the 2 worst enemies of any mail client. They can pop up with any issue at any time.

I'm having the same problem and, yes, the emails are stuck in the Outbox. I
uninstalled McAfee and installed Avast! but I still can't get the emails to
leave my Outbox. Suggestions?

I am having a similar problem. History first. Probably about a month ago I
had to do a system resore on my notebook. Before then everything was working
good. I have two seperate profiles setup on my notebook. One for my wife
and one for me. I got the problem within a few days after the restore on my
wifes profile but not mine. I can not send/receive all or send all. It just
locks up with no detail on the error. It even happens with send all by
itself. I can still send from the new email screen. What makes it funny is
that my profile works just fine but not the wifes. Can any one explain that?

I'm not sure if they're bigger culpritts worse than users who believe
that instructions are only for "little people" and that MVP's have
crystal balls
but your'e not far off.

An autoreply message from this forum saying
"Kill Norton and McAffee" would clear up half the problems
reported here.

It could well be anti-virus software that is causing you grief.
Most likely you have McAfee or Norton AV installed
in which case get rid of them and use

Should you encounter messages stuck in Outbox...

I'm new to all of this! I just bought this computer and all I've had are
problems! I'd rather keep my only Windows 98 HP!!! Is Windows Vista the
issue? I cannot send my mail! This is the error message I receive:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

Any ideas?

What did your e-mail servicer provider say?

You left off the most important part of the error message. It will look
something like this:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'smtp.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
