You need to follow Gmail's setup instructions:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13276

Specifically, the SMTP server port is 465, not 25.

The connection to the server has failed.

That's the message. Elrod.

If a Gmail account works with your Windows Mail, then this is more
ammo to present to EarthLink.

Take my word for it, there are a few things I have expertise in,
and mail servers is one of them.
During a so-called SMTP transaction, your mail program has a
conversation with the SMTP mail server. Some of that conversation
is originated by the 'client' (your mail program), and some of it
represents responses from the server. The statement

Server Response: 550 From: address is not valid

is a response your email program received from the mail server.
So, I say again, EarthLink's server is rejecting your upload attempt.

The message was from MS live mail and that IT was restricting my mail Anyway
I am waiting for a response from MS. When I get it I will let you know.
Thanks. Elrod.

Vista is not doing the blocking. EarthLink's mail server is.

The pass word is correct. I get the same message if I send a single email to
just myself. I agree another program may be interfering. It all started when
I downloaded a microsoft upgrade but I can't undo it or even identify which
one. Live mail beta has a suppport site. I have contacted them. I'll let you
know what they have to say. When I typed in my problem and error there was
suggestion that Vista may have seen my activities as illegal and blocked my
out going mail! Big Brother!???? That could be scary. I'll let you know what
I find out. Thanks. Elrod.

:

Well I downloaded the Beta version today. Lost all my saved info. I saved
most of the important stuff to a disc. New message is:
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Live Mail", and read
the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help
determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service
provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'.

Subject 'Fw: Tom H here'

settings.
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC79
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 587
Secure(SSL): No

The message is rejecting '(e-mail address removed)'. Is that your correct
address? If so, your password must be wrong or else some other program on
your computer is interfering.

Or else it's going to more recipients than EarthLink is currently allowing.

Ok the Gmail will send now. I appreciate all the advice on getting a new
email account but in my business I may not hear from a client for two or
three years. For this reason I have kept the same email and cell phone for
years. I will have another session with earthlink but been too busy right
now. Will post what I find out when I do. Elrod.

As I understand it, you have no problem *receiving* EarthLink email.
You may have a problem replying to that email.
One workaround is to go into your Windows Mail EarthLink account
properties and replace the EarthLink SMTP server name and settings
with the Gmail SMTP server name and settings. Your correspondents
will never notice the difference. There is no requirement that the
sending and receiving servers for a given account be a matched pair.

Going through the same problem in Windows Mail. I got no help from Windows or
my ISP or my computer name. I was on the phone for three hours with my
internet company. NO Help. Will call them again since I am receiving no
assistence with this problem. I'm not at all happy with Windows Vista.

Your email account provider should have a help page on their website with
the correct server names and settings.
Some even have tutorials. If they don't have one for Windows Mail, use the
one for Outlook Express.

Or, if you tell us who provides your email account, perhaps someone can
help.

I can not send emails with windows mail.
Started about a week ago. Spent 5 hours on live help with my ISP, the

and even let them take over my computer for two hours. They gave up and
told
me to contact Microsoft. I have read all these threads and we did all
those
things. I do not agree with the advice of removing your anti-virus in

I need to send emails and I am very dissapointed in Vista. I am seriosly

Xena2, we will be glad to help you if you tell us
a) what the exact problem is, and
b) include a complete copy of any error message.
