Well I downloaded the Beta version today. Lost all my saved info. I saved
most of the important stuff to a disc. New message is:
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Live Mail", and read
the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help
determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service
provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'.

Subject 'Fw: Tom H here'
Server Error: 550
Server Response: 550 From: address is not valid. Please check your email
settings.
Server: 'smtpauth.earthlink.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC79
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 587
Secure(SSL): No

Any suggestions? Elrod.

fix it for me. Kinda like buying a car the paying for the keys seperate. If
enough little people took the product back then the big businesses would
start looking for a fix because it would start cutting into their profit
margin. The bottom line would be affected. Again I sincerely thank you for
your help. You take the time out of your life to volunteer on this forum. If

So Mr. Gates sells a defective product that every one is forced to buy if
they want a new computer, unless you buy a Mac, and offers no support unless
you want to pay him more. As I said before. Marketing! The "Geek Squads" are
even having trouble with this one. I thought the government was picking on
poor old Bill but I guess for once they knew what they were doing! I've got a
new, pretty much top of the line computer that is under warranty so I guess
they will have to replace it. Thank you for the responses to give to them to
justify replacement. Maybe I can get a new one every 6 weeks or so. Thanks
again. Elrod.

Ok I went to Symantecs site and followed thier instuctions. Nothing to remove
and the mail still does not work. I have many emails comming in and it is a
pain to read them in windows and then go to gmail to send answers.
Again I will ask. Is there somewhere online I can go or someone I can call
for microsoft support? Elrod.

:

Yes the uninstall ended succcessfully. I will later today go to Nortons site
and try that. We too the error message very seriously and changed and
reconfigured all my earthlink data numerous times. We not only uninstalled
all third party security software but dis-abled windows security as well. As
I said this was at least a 5 hour session and every one worked hard. Thanks.
Elrod.

:

I understand you removed your antivirus. Was this removal accomplished
as a regular uninstall? Did the uninstall routine conclude with a message
saying the program was successfully uninstalled? The reason I harp on this
is because both McAfee and Symantec Norton found it necessary to
provide special removal utilities on their website, because their programs
are so difficult to uninstall successfully.
Did you replace the antivirus with anything? Are you using any other third
party security software such as anti-spyware or firewall?

I take it that you and EarthLink decided that the error message
from EarthLink's server ("From: address is not valid") is bogus.

So you are getting exactly the same error message from two
different email programs. This would tend to rule out the possibility
that there was something wrong with your Windows Mail program.

That error message is extremely unusual, so I am at a loss as to
what could be causing it.

I assume you have double-checked that your email address as
entered under the General tab of the account properties is a valid
EarthLink email address? Some ISPs do not allow you to use a
bogus address, or an address that belongs to a different domain.

No Gary my information is correct. Earthlink is the only ISP I have ever
used. My business I may not hear from a client for two years. So I never
change my email address or server. I use gmail as a "filing system" but can't
forward the mails now. I live chatted with earthlink again tonight but they
are at a loss also. I did go back and trace when it started. 10/11/07 when I
did some microsoft critical updates. I try to keep all my computers up to
date. I grew up on dos and kinda miss it. Point and click is nice but is like
the cameras. No room for creativity. I work on a lot of old pc/plc programms
so I keep some of the old orange screens around. Even have a working 64. LOL.
Doing work right now on some plc2/16 in Detroit. AB T50 was used. Weighs
about 75lbs and has a whole meg of memory. Today I was working on an old
Winchester tape drive in a prototype(1984) ABB machine interfaced with a
GEFANUC smart screen. Only 4 were ever made. I used an old Toshiba "lunch
box" to programm. All this new stuff is like spell check. People forget how
to spell. Me too. Elrod.

The message is rejecting '(e-mail address removed)'. Is that your correct

your computer is interfering.

Or else it's going to more recipients than EarthLink is currently allowing.

The pass word is correct. I get the same message if I send a single email to
just myself. I agree another program may be interfering. It all started when
I downloaded a microsoft upgrade but I can't undo it or even identify which
one. Live mail beta has a suppport site. I have contacted them. I'll let you
know what they have to say. When I typed in my problem and error there was
suggestion that Vista may have seen my activities as illegal and blocked my
out going mail! Big Brother!???? That could be scary. I'll let you know what
I find out. Thanks. Elrod.

If you are determined to get to the bottom of this issue, you would
have to try some variables, one at a time. Example: Set that account
up on a different computer.

As a workaround, you could get a free Gmail account, configure it
for POP/SMTP access, then substitute its SMTP server for
smtpauth.earthlink.net. Your correspondents will never know the difference.

just myself.
I'll let you know what
I find out. Thanks. Elrod.

Take my word for it, there are a few things I have expertise in,
and mail servers is one of them.
During a so-called SMTP transaction, your mail program has a
conversation with the SMTP mail server. Some of that conversation
is originated by the 'client' (your mail program), and some of it
represents responses from the server. The statement

Server Response: 550 From: address is not valid

is a response your email program received from the mail server.
So, I say again, EarthLink's server is rejecting your upload attempt.

Just to prove that your Windows Mail will work properly with other
mail servers, get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13273

If a Gmail account works with your Windows Mail, then this is more
ammo to present to EarthLink.

Will a Hotmail account work with Windows Mail? I don't think so.
You might have to download Windows Live Mail to connect to
such an account.

Gmail works fine with Windows Live Mail. You can use their Outlook
Express setup instructions. I've been using it that way for 6 months.
In fact, Gmail works fine with *any* POP mail client.
Did you set it up according to these instructions:
