Can't See One Network Computer

C

Chuck

:

Chuck, I did figure out how to delete NetBUI and IPV6, but when I restart
the computer, I log on as a different user in our network. I have to log off
that user and sign myself in. Isn't that crazy???

OK, Lori. That's a second good start. What different user is presented? Is it
a user that you setup once? Or is it one that you've never seen before? How do
you "log off that user and sign yourself in"? Remember that I can't look at
your computer as you're doing this, so be detailed and precise.

Did you check each computer, and make sure that neither IPV6, IPX/SPX, or
NetBEUI is present on any computer? Does that make any difference in Network
Neighborhood?

Chuck,
I have been in an all-out panic. I can never log-in under my own desktop
now. My son's laptop (wireless connection) always shows up. In order to
bring myself back to my own computer, I have to log-off by pressing start,
log-off, and then sign in under my own name. But if I was to shut
down/restart, it comes back with his laptop again on my computer. I could
always share files with him and him with me, so this is now new.

Now, I didn't go around deleting everyone's netBUI/IPV6, etc. I was a bit
panicked and still am. When I went into my son's room, his laptop said there
was an IP conflict and now when I ipconfig/all, it only shows one computer.
I will show you what's there now. Please look below.

I am in NY and am about to give up as it's getting late, so if you could
reply sooner, I'd really, really appreciate it. I am not understanding how I
got to this messed up state where I no longer can sign into my own computer
anymore and I'm very worried.

Thanks. Please see below:

Lori,

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'll help you if possible. As far as the
panic goes, I've been there too. Just try and calm down, whatever you did we
can probably fix.

I'm still a bit confused with your description:

I can never log-in under my own desktop now. My son's laptop (wireless
connection) always shows up. In order to bring myself back to my own computer,
I have to log-off by pressing start, log-off, and then sign in under my own

How late do you want to work on this? Obviously, I have the advantage here.

Chuck,
I can't work much later as it's almost 11 PM here and I do have work in the
morning, but let me try to explain this. When I removed NetBUI and the IPV6,
when I restarted my computer, no longer will I see my desktop or my icons.
It gives my son's name of his lap top above when you click start and see
programs. It says "TOSHIBA-USER," which is him, not me. If I click to see a
user profile, it lists me and him. Now, my computer is called MOMSDELL.
There is one for that, but then there is one that says "MOMSDELL-TOSHIBER
USER." I delete that, restart my computer and it's back again. It is only
giving me the option of a local profile, not a roaming.

I had absolutely no problems with my computer today before we started
troubleshooting why I couldn't see my daughter's files but she could see
mine. Now I can't even do a system restore because if I were to do that, it
would sign back onto my computer after ANY restart under my SON'S profile.
There is no MOMSDELL-TOSHIBA USER.

Plus, now my son's laptop keeps giving him the error message that there is
an IP conflict. That's right, we both share the same IP address. When I
icponfig/all, I no longer show three other computers, just one.

I went to the site of my router (Dlink) and ran their wizard thinking it may
help, but it didn't. I don't know how this can be fixed. What is
frightening is that I can't even do a system restore anymore since his
computer's desktop is always showing on my desktop upon startup.

Please tell me how this occured because I haven't got a clue. This morning,
my computer ran like a top. Tonight, it's being shared with my son's laptop.
Ouch!!!

Lori,

So far, I've been trying to help you by solving your symptoms. Maybe we need to
take a step back, and look for the problem.

First, if you setup the network properly, and have connectivity, you only need
TCP/IP, and NetBIOS Over TCP. You don't need IPV6, IPX/SPX, or NetBEUI. But
you have to setup all computers the same. It doen't help, and it may hurt, if
one computer has a protocol or transport that another doesn't. So please start
by removing all protocols besides TCP/IP and NBT from all computers.

Next, we need to look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from all
computers. Not just 2. Your original post mentioned 4 computers. If you're
getting a message about an IP address conflict, you're going to have to look at
all 4 computers.

If you want to call it a day, fine. I'll be around tomorrow, from time to time.
If you want to email me (address below), fine.

I am actually now having stomach pains. I deleted from Users of the network
anything resembling my son's laptop (Toshia) and when I rebooted, I couldn't
get into Windows at all. No safe mode, nothing. So finally I got in my
pressing F12 but I am afraid to sign off again for fear I won't get in.

I checked my daughter's and one of my son's computers and they have neither
NetBUI or the IPV6 or ISPX (or whatever those letters are). I do have to
check my other son's laptop and desktop (he has two). Now, the question is,
does a laptop need any of those before I delete them?

And what do I do about getting back the use of my own computer at start up?
I can't understand how this happened from deleting those two things from my
Network setup files.

Chuck, it is now 7 AM here in NY. I was hoping to have heard back from you
last night with something to try. Are you deserting me??? Please tell me
it's not so. I am keeping my computer on since I lost total access last
night after deleting the laptop as a user from my computer. Had to press F12
to get back in on boot up. I am a mess now.

Lori,

It's 7:00 here in California. You'll have to get used to the vagaries of
Usenet, unless you wish to email me (not a normal solution, but we are so far
down into this thread I don't see anything better).

First, what I said was you need to delete all unnecessary protocols and
transports, such as IPV6, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI. I did not mention deleting
users.

Then, we need to look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer.

And calm down.
