Can't See One Network Computer

G

Guest

We have a wireless route (DLink DI-624) that has been working great for a
long time. It seems that one of the four computers, although it shows in the
network list, no one can access that computer's files, yet that computer can
access the other computer's files. I have tried everything to be able to see
that computer's files but no luck.

Can someone provide a type of check list to do through to make sure
something isn't checked wrong or something along those lines? I am stumped.
There is no firewall on, I clicked to share the files and I don't know what
else to try.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Lori,

Start with my troubleshooting guide.

If you're actually having "...access denied..." errors, understand file sharing
and authentication.

Chuck,
HELP! I read these articles on the links and this is, for example, the
problem I'm running into, besides it being highly technical (IMHO). For
instance, where it says:

If you want to enable Simple File Sharing on a computer running XP Pro or
MCE, from Windows Explorer:

Select Tools - Folder Options.
On the Views tab, scroll to the end of the long Advanced settings list.
Check "Use simple file sharing"

I don't have, at the end of the long Advanced settings list, "Use simple
file sharing" to select from. I was able to activate Guest account under the
one computer no one can see (although her computer sees all of ours), since
it had Guest disabled, but that didn't help. I am truly stuck as to what to
try. Nothing in those articles, even though we are all operating on XP Home
seems to apply to us. Any other thoughts off the top of your head, please???

PS: Another thing I wasn't able to do is, under the Administrative Tools,
when it talks about under Computer Management, where there is supposed to a
section for users, there is none. Also, I had no "restrictanonymous" entry
under Lsa of the registry. Followed all the paths and it doesn't even exist.

OK, Lori, I know it's all too technical for some. That's why this forum (and
others like it) exist.

What version, edition (if XP, is it Home or Pro), and Service Pack of Windows?
That's the key. Right click on My Computer, and select Properties. Type
everything under System: here.

First, let me say, THANK YOU for understanding and working with me.

Now, my computer, which can't see anything on the other one (although hers
can see mine), the info is Windows XP Home, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.
The computer that can see everyone else's stuff but no one else can see is
Windows XP Home, Version 2002, Service Pack 1.

Hope this helps.

OK, Lori. This makes sense now. With XP Home, you don't have any of those
selections. Read again, please. I'll try and make this simpler, with your help
and participation.

If your computer runs XP Home, then it has Simple File Sharing already. SFS,
which only uses Guest authentication, cannot be disabled under XP Home.

To use Simple File Sharing on any XP server, Home or Pro, make sure that the
Guest account is properly activated, and the password is consistently set (blank
or non-blank), on both the client and the server.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html

Then read instructions for using Guest.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Guest

Now, precisely what error are you seeing? Does the "server" (computer with the
shared folders) not show up in Network Neighborhood?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

Or do you get "...access denied..." when you try to access a share that does
show in NN?

Okay. I did all the synchronizations and made sure the passwords were all
blank and that all the accounts were activated, but still no go! I don't
know what else is left. These are ALL XP Home computers. I am currently
doing an update on the computer that can see everyone else's and access
everyone else's computers in the network, but whose no one else in the
network can see. She is NOT the administrator of the network, by the way. I
am don't know else could be wrong.
Do you think upgrading to Service Pack 2 might help? We have one other
computer in the network (four desktops and one laptop) that is still on SP1,
but he has no trouble with anything. Are we giving up yet???

Thanks, Chuck, for your persistence. I'm sure it's something I am missing
that is probably not big thing, but until I can zero in on it...

Chuck,
Have been reading on MS web site and doing all the things your articles
suggested and no luck. One thing I did note, when I ran from "run"
\\"computername" (of course, using the real computer names), I was able to
open all the files on the two other computers on the network, but not the one
giving us the trouble. And vice versa. I even tried my own name on my
computer to test local connectivity and it worked fine. It is just that one
computer that no one else can see but she can see and use all of our
files/folders.

I am about to give up. I don't think there is anything left to try short of
upgrading to Service Pack 2, and I don't put much hope in that fixing this
problem. Please let me know if there is anything else you can think of to
try.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Lori,

You're talking about a browser problem. Let's try analysing the problem,
instead of guessing at it. Please provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all"
from BOTH computers. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely:

Chuck, I cannot use browstat because it tells me it is not recognized as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I tried, but
no luck.
This is for my computer, the one connected to the router. This is one that
can't see the data on the other computer, although her computer can see mine.
This is running on Windows XP Home, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I will
send you the info for the trouble computer that I can't see in a minute.
Have to do it from her computer.

I did notice that NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled appeared, and
from reading all day, that's not right, is it?

Chuck, something weird just happened. I removed NetBUI and it told me to
restart my computer. When I did, it came up with the desktop of my son's
laptop computer. I had to log off and sign on with my info to get my
computer back. What is going on???

Okay. Chuck. Call me stupid, but I don't know how to remove the IPV6 or the
Netbui. I know I can probably disable the netBUI but don't know how to get
rid of the Teredo Tunneling. Please instruct. There were no links or
instructions on that one. So sorry.

Chuck, I did figure out how to delete NetBUI and IPV6, but when I restart
the computer, I log on as a different user in our network. I have to log off
that user and sign myself in. Isn't that crazy???
