Can't remove software....

LMO

Aloha all. I have Dell XPS 410. It came with a default sound system
(SigmaTel, which stinks). I bought a new sound card, but am unable to remove
the old drivers for the SigmaTel. I keep getting errors saying that the
software cannot be removed. There is also no soundcard seen in the Device
Manager, so I am unable to remove it, thus I cannot get the new sound card
to run.
Any ideas on how to completely remove all traces of the old sound card and
software?
Thanks!

Hi LMO

Sometimes an uninstall fails because the necessary path info in the
registry is wrong. If you're confident, you can check yourself by
firing up regedit and looking for the SigmaTel drivers in a sub-key
under:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall]

Or (probably better) you can try a free program called Add Remove Pro.
This can check the uninstall string for you and search for any files
needed, then allow you to change the uninstall string and remove the
drivers.

If the uninstall path references some file that doesn't exist, probably
the best thing to do (though it sounds the reverse!) is to re-install
the SigmaTel drivers and then try removing them.

The failed uninstall could be the reason you're not seeing the card in
Device Manager, too. Try checking Show Hidden Devices in the View menu
and then look to see if you have a category called Other Devices (its
icon is a big yellow question mark:) Sometimes incorrectly-installed
devices get put in there because Windows doesn't recognise them.

Hope some of this helps. Let us know how you get on :)

Try checking the system's BIOS & seeing if you can disable the on-board
sound chip there. It might work!

I tried to reinstall the drivers. They would not install. I got the
following error:

Error Code: -5011 : 0x8002802b
Error Information:
SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (558)
PAPP:SigmaTel
PVENDOR:SigmaTel (http://www.SigmaTel.com)
PGUID:A462213D-EED4-42C2-9A60-7BDD4D4B0B17
$10.1.0.238

That means nothing to me. Does it mean anything to someone out there?

Sorry you're having such a hard time, LMO.

That seems to be an InstallShield error. See if this helps:
