Remove Integrated Sound Card?

Aloha.
My Dell XPS 410 came with an integrated sound card (built in to the MB).
It's a SigmaTel card, but they no longer support it. The card doesn't even
show up as a hardware device, only the SigmaTel Codec shows up, but not the
drivers.
I bought a new sound card, but it will not work. I am assuming I must first
remove anything connected with the integrated sound card. How do I do that
when it doesn't show up as a device?
Dell will not help, as I wiped Vista and installed XP.
Thank you.

hit the del key as the pc boot sup, enter bios, go into the integrated
peripherals menu item and there should be an option in there somewhere
to disable the onboard sound.

Wiping out Vista and reinstalling XP on a Dell XPS 410 is a crapshoot. Try
googling "installing XP on XPS 410" The reason Dell doesn't offer an XP
alternative on this box whereas the XPS 710 can be had either way is due to
some hardware incompatability with XP. Dell did not go into specifics as to
what it was. Since you don't have any specifics as to exactly how you
removed Vista and installed XP, or which sound card you are trying to
install, plus a host of other relevant details, it's hard to say. It isn't
that Dell no longer supports the SigmaTel integrated audio....how can they
say that about factory installed hardware on a currently manufacted system?
It's because you told them you wiped the Vista install and stuck XP on it.
My advice.....call and ask how to disable the onboard sound because you want
to upgrade to a different card without mentioning the fact you've hosed the
OS. When they ask for the service tag and pull up your incriminating case
history, tell them you've restored with the Dell DVD back to spec and want
to know how to do it. Or stick with Vista....

it is possible that the sigmatel hardware is on the "High Def Audio Bus",
and if it is then Dev Manager won't see it until you install the "MS UAA
Driver" (Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio Driver). see
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111

Dell should offer this driver too. there may also be a modem on that bus,
and it too won't be detected until you install UAA.

Once UAA is working you can then install the driver for the audio and
modem (without UAA the driver installer will simply say it can't find the
device).

Many thanks, Brad. I will try reinstalling the new card over the weekend and
let you know.
Is it normal for the integrated SigmaTel card to have Advanced Bass and
Treble Controls grayed out in the Volume Control? Also, how come I cannot
get volume control to show up in the System tray?
Thanks again!

Brad;
Again, many thanks. That did it.
Now another question. The new card is installed and working. However, every
time I boot up, the system finds "new" hardware and I have to put the cd in
the drive and reinstall the card. How come?
