Can't remove Messenger 4.7

N

Nick Tyrrell

My wife downloaded MSN Messenger 6. The problem is that
this did not overwrite Windows Messenger 4.7, with the
consequence that both start running and try to log me on,
resulting in "You have been logged out.." messages.

I have tried:

- setting Windows MEssenger to not start at start-up. It
still does.

- uninstalling it from "Add/remove Windows components".
It now shows as not installed, but it still starts up!

I can't apply the RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %
windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove hack recomended
elsewhere on this board, since this requires shutting
Windows Messenger down and it refuses to shut, claiming
another program is using its functions (this happens
regardless of whether I have OE running).

This is driving me nuts! Any help appreciated.

thanks

Nick

Greetings Nick,

MSN Messenger 6 does not replace Windows Messenger 4.7 (they are separate, different
products). You can fully remove Windows Messenger 4.7, but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems).

It does sound like you've disabled it using the usual means -- do you have Norton Antivirus
2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus
2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior. To stop it, open Norton
Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by
the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Assuming this was the problem, you can still uninstall it using the "rundll32" method you
already described if you like (albeit breaking the features I mentioned above).

Thanks Jonathan -- I'm very grateful. I do indeed have
NAV 2003 installed. I'll let you know how it goes.
