Removing Windows Messenger 5.1

How do you uninstall Windows Messenger 5.1, I would like to go back the
previous version asap (messenger 5.0 xp).

Unfortunately I am receiving the following error box when trying to
downgrade from version 5.1 to messenger 5.0 -

"your computer as a newer version of windows messenger 5.0 than the one you
are trying to install. To install an older version, first remove the current
version click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add Remove Windows Messenger
5.0 - and then run setup again"

Firstly the add/remove option for Messenger 5.1 is not listed, also I have
tried running the following scripts which does no work (although they
physically remove messenger files, I still receive the same error when
install messenger 5.0)

Tried the following -

Re-Applying XP SP2
Removing SP2 and Reapply
Downgrading to 4.7 then upgrading to 5.0
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Remove Messenger from Add/Remove Additional Components

Tried all the above and still cant downgrade from messenger 5.1 to messenger
5.0, whats the trick guys - I'm stuck and out of ideas!!!!

Greetings,

To remove Windows Messenger 5.1, click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
msiexec /x {C3A6819F-62D3-4750-AF1C-28206DDF2C2E}
then click OK.

It may report that the prduct isn't installed, if so, reinstall 5.1 and then remove it.

Hi,
I've been using Messenger 5.0 but recently when I tried signing in, a
message appeared requiring me to upgrade to Latest version to continue.
Following the link, I downloaded the latest version, Messenger 6.0.
However, I still cannot proceed with the installation. I only successfully
finished the download but the next step, which is the set-up, would not
prosper.
I then checked on the system requirements of the Messenger 6.0. It requires
a Windows XP OS. I only have Windows NT on my PC and cannot upgrade to XP
due to company policy.
Can I reinstate my Messenger 5.0 and still use it?

Greetings,

Windows Messenger does not work with NT4 and never has, to clarify your question you are
looking for MSN Messenger.

You can find 5.0 here:

Jonathan, I tried the steps for removing the Windows Messenger 5.1 and get
the message that it can only be used to remove installed products. So I went
back through the installation again. Then tried the remove steps and get the
same message. I wanted to install a previous version to see if that might
clear my problem. You may can help me with this. I recently installed a
Linksys WRT54G router. Since then Windows Messenger signs me off and back on
about every 15 to 30 minutes. Linksys Support was no help. It doesn't happen
if I remove the router. Thanks for any help.

Greetings,

What's mentioned here is for an earlier version (note the post is from 2004).

You can uninstall it with this instead:
msiexec /x {A44413DC-17D5-4F0B-A128-8B590B20323C}

In most cases, throwing away Windows Messenger and using Windows Live Messenger
(http://get.live.com/messenger/overview) will solve the issue you're experiencing however.

Will Windows Live Messenger allow me to still continue to communicate with my
contacts on Windows Messenger and vice-versa? Will it export my current
contact list over to Windows Live Messenger? I don't need a lot of fancy
features, just a simple way to communicate with other co-workers.

Hi,

As long as you're just using the public .NET Messenger service (not Exchange IM or SIP), all
you have to do is log into the other client. It's exactly the same and requires no work on
your part.
