Can't open .ppt attachments from email

I am unable to open any powerpoint attachments that have been emailed to me, even if I send them to myself.. this is the error that I get: PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by blahblahblah.pp
when I go to help it says: Microsoft Office PowerPoint has encountered errors and cannot open this file. Try opening another copy of the file. For example, if the file was sent to you in an e-mail message, have the person who sent the message send it again, and then try to open the file again. If you opened the file from a floppy disk, try to open another copy of the file on a new disk
I know the files work, I can open them on other computers after they've been emailed but I can't open them on mine.. even when they are files that I've created and sent to myself
Any suggestions
is it a setting in Outlook that is causing the problem? I can open every other type of file that has been sent except ppt

Unprotected PowerPoint files are easily corrupted when sent via e-mail. Try
using a zip program prior to mailing the presentation.

You will not get much compression from the zip because PowerPoint already
does a pretty good job of this, but you may find the presentations more
stable, once unzipped, on the receiver's end.
