Can't logon as Owner or Administrator!

I was cleaning the "trojan.byte" virus from my HP with XP
Home edition. Followed Norton's instructions to turn
off "system restore" (to clear out possible infections). I
went into the folder where you tell the computer to start
in safe mode, applied the settings and restarted. All
went as expected, I logged in and ran Norton, which found
5 infected files and deleted them. I then went back into
the folder and changed the restart to "Normal" and then
back to the msconfig menu, I turned off some suspicious
looking processes in the startup tab. I then shutdown and
started the computer.

Now my problem is that when the screen comes up to say
logon as "Owner", I click on that and for a second I see
my main screen but it immediately logs me out and returns
me to the logon as Owner screen again! All I can do is try
and logon (whic produces the results mentioned) or
shutdown. I have done the F8 thing to run safe mode, but
same results when I try to logon as owner or
Administrator.

Does anyone know how I can get past this issue and what
might I have done to cause it?

Thanks,

Dave

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration
feature in Windows XP

(307852) - Describes how to use the Last Known Good Configuration
feature when you have problems after you make a change to your computer.
This feature restores registry information and driver settings to those that
were used at the last successful startup.

Second thing to try is create a Boot Floppy Disk, if you are not
successfull with this option, view the Support WebCast for all available
Boot Options.

Create a Boot Floppy Disk with a Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305595&Product=winxp
1.. Format a floppy disk by using the Windows XP format utility. For
example, with the floppy disk in the floppy disk drive, type format a: at a
command prompt, and then press ENTER.
2.. Copy the Ntldr and the Ntdetect.com files from the I386 folder on the
Windows XP Setup CD-ROM, Windows XP Setup floppy disk, or from a computer
that is running the same version of Windows XP as the computer that you want
to access with the boot floppy.
3.. Create a Boot.ini file (or copy one from a computer that is running
Windows XP), and then modify it to match the computer that you are trying to
access. The following example works for a single-partition IDE drive with
Windows XP installed in the \Windows folder, but the exact value in the
[operating systems] section depends on the configuration of the Windows XP
computer that you are trying to access:
