Can't Install Updates, Missing Programs From Start Up Menu

I am not sure what my friend did his computer but almost everything
disappeared from his desktop as well as the start menu. The items that are
still listed on the start menu, such as games, no longer have anything in
them. If you go to my computer, some of the items are listed there but even
if you can get it to open, such as windows media player, you can't use it.
When I go to help and support, some of the topics at the end have XOX, I do
not know what that means and where a graphic would usually go it has a x and
then a few words describing what sort of graphic it is suppose to be. When
you try to update it says the page is unavailable. I am on a different
computer right now so I don't have the error message with me. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated as he can't use office, the media player, or
nothing. Thanks

If this is the result of a virus or malware of some kind, he can call
Microsoft at 1-866-pcsafety and get free help.

This is going to go best with live help on the phone, I suspect--so I'd
encourage you to go that route.
