Tried the install suggested, but ... I CAN"T INSTALL OR UNINSTALL SO THIS

Also tried the sfc /scannow and checked for compatibility and got the
following message (see below) ... for original post and MVP advice see
further below.

CD Recording Software
=====================

A CD-recording driver is installed that might cause stability problems,
including problems shutting down and problems using a CD/DVD drive. This
driver will be disabled.

This driver might have been installed by Easy CD Creator , Windows Media
Player or RealJukebox . You might not be able to record CDs until you
obtain compatible drivers.

Roxio, Inc. provides an update for Easy CD Creator users at the Easy CD
Creator Updates Web site.

For Windows Media Player users, see the Microsoft Web site at
http://www.microsoft.com .

For RealJukebox users, see the RealNetworks Web site at http://www.real.com
..

Second note:
" This problem may occur if you have a large number of INF files in your
%windir%\Inf folder. In this case, Windows incorrectly searches the
whole INF folder for information about which drivers to update instead
of searching only for currently installed drivers "

If you find the above is the case, go here :

Do you have a large number of INF files in your
%windir%\Inf folder? The KB article specifically states that the fix is
for that issue, not an incompatible driver for a CD burner.
If you don't have the .inf files then the fix is not for your issue.

You have some driver type software - and the old CD burning software
from Adaptec/Roxio is very likely - that is not compatible with XP. AS
a result it is giving the message, and also preventing the system from
using the device. To tidy up, get a registry patch file, cdgone.reg,
from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and
merge it into the registry

I see no reason why your HP9300 should not work; a 9100 did for me.
The RecordNow and DLA they have now on their site ought to work if you
get it. See
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40380.html
and direct link to the DLA
