OK, so I downloaded avs4you's video converter and converting the file to wmv
worked. But it has the watermark banner on it because I haven't activated it
yet. I just want to make sure this is what I want to do. Is buying the year
subscription to avs4you worth it or are there any other converters out there
I should try?

Sorry but I'm not familiar with avs4you's video converter...
apparently it was one of the Google ads that were placed
on one of the sites I posted for you. If it works for you and
you are willing to purchase it that would be your choice.

There are many different options available for converting
files and I suspect that just about everyone you ask would
give you a different answer.

Several options are offered on the following sites:

Movie Maker 2 - Importing AVI Files
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Video-AVI.html

Useful Programmes
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/WebPages/UsefulProgrammes.htm

Personally I think I would use GSpot to identify the
codec I needed to use the .avi file in movie maker.

Though Codec Packs are generally not recommended...
I've had success using K-Lite:

Download K-Lite Codec Pack
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Good luck with your choices...

As there are so many free convertors on the market I'd second John's mention
to use the two links to find another one.
Personally I wouldn't bother adding any condecs to try to use the file in
movie maker, as it probalby won't use it :(
But I'd definately use Gspot to avicodec to find out what the file is first.

Well, I used Windows Media Encoder to convert the file to wmv and I was able
to import it! It took forever, but it worked. The only thing is that it
broke the video up into a bunch of tiny clips, some only 2 seconds long. I
guess it doesn't really matter, but just wondering why it's doing that and if
there's any way to change it. Thanks again for all your help.

When importing the .wmv into movie maker...
on the 'Import File" screen...try unchecking...
"Create clips for video files".

I guess this was when importing into movie maker?
If so, there is a little check box
Creat clips for video files
Untick it and you'll get just one file.
