.avi files

Can anyone offer any suggestions for my problem below. I am using Gateway
7200X Windows XP Home SP2 Have Windows Media Player 9 installed.
Have a Canon A70 Camera that I can make the movies with that make the .avi
files
ATI Radeon X600 Pro 128 MB Video Card
I am just a novice user and know nothing about Movie Maker. I tried asking
this question on the photo forum and John suggested that I ask here.

Is there a way to change .avi files to .wmv files. Using Windows XP home.
Import the .avi file into Windows Movie Maker.
(File / Import Into Collections)
Drag the file to the time line.
Go to...File / Save Movie File / My Computer /
Next...choose a title and a save location / Next /
Tick..."Best quality for playback on my computer" /
Next / Finish.

Hi John, I did as you suggested (after I found Movie Maker) and it made the
..wmv file. But when I play it all the colors are wrong. You can not see the
images as in the .avi file. Do you have an idea of what I am missing? I have
media player 9, should I update it to 10? Or do you have any other
suggestions.

I'm not sure, Walt...try asking your
question in the MovieMaker group:

Hi Walt,

Your A70 records video as Motion JPEG files with an .AVI extension, so you
might be into a codec issue, with Movie Maker not being able to handle the
files unless you convert them to a different one first, with a different
codec.... and you have 3 choices of quality... sometimes different codecs
are used for the different choices.

It's a complex situation with many codecs on your system and Movie Maker
being able to use some more so than others.... email a test file if you want
and I'll take a look at it.. to see if it works in Movie Maker here, and how
I can convert it if it doesn't.... my email is

Got the sample... it imported fine into MM2, went to the timeline and
rendered into a movie... the new file is on its way back to you.... no
issues so far.

Hi Walt
I use the A70
Have you installed the canon software.....the reason I ask is that I
believe it has the jpeg codec on there.

I contacted Canon support and this is the responce that I received, is this a
good choice?
Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Please make sure you have the latest version of QuickTime on your system
which provides you with the codec required to playback the movie files
from your PowerShot A70. We hope this information is helpful.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

David

Are you saying that sometimes movies from the A70 work fine and at
others they dont work in MM2 at all? What happens if you play them in
zoombrowser or in Windows Media Player (if you can), and then try MM2.

I had that problem a year ago. Basically I found it was a codec problem.
Sometimes a codec that supported jpgavi would be active in mm2 and at
others it wouldnt. After I ran the movie outside mm2, all of a sudden it
would work in MM2. This obviously wasnt satisfactory, unfortunately my
solution was to reinstal XP, but at the time I had other problems.

Now I would start by deinstalling and reinstalling the Canon software
(The latest versions are on the canon site - I use zoombrowser to
transfer/rename my photos) - the deinstall/reinstal only takes about
five minutes.

After that I would look up PapaJohns site re codec issues (problem
solving-> crashes and hangs) and/or try turning on/off codecs in MM2 (
tools->options[compatibility] note: each time you turn off a codec you
will need to restart MM2, you can turn off multiple codecs at once) one
by one until the problem goes away.
Leave the last one off then try turning others back on Test all the
types of movies you want to use and if ok

The problem is that I cannot get them to play in Windows Media Player when I
change them to a .wvm file they will work if I leave them as a .avi file.
Canon says I need to install Quick Time for it to work? I appreciate the
help. I really don't understand all this movie making stuff. Trying to learn.
