Can't get WinXp and W2k boxes to see each other.

I have a WinXP and a W2k box, both connected to internet through the
router built into my cable modem(Motorola SBG1000). They access the
internet just fine, but I can't get them to see each other. I have
tried the wizard on the XP machine, but it fails, or it tells me to
put the XP CD into the 2k box. WHen I do that, the dialog box says it
can only work with 95, 98, Me, or XP machines. I have tried setting
consecutive addresses on both machines(192.168.001.010 and
192.168.001.020), but that didn't do anything but prevent either
machine from accessing the internet. How can I get these machines to
see each other?

What is the router's LAN IP address? Does it have a built in DHCP service?

If you set the routers IP Address to 192.168.0.1 and enable DHCP on it, you
should be able to just set both machines to have their IP addresses
automatically assigned by the router and you would just need to make sure
that they are in the same Workgroup...

My best guess...

You're right about the router, I go to its control pages by pointing
my browser at 192.168.0.1. And its DHCP server is enabled. I have
both PC's set to obtain their IP adresses dynamically, and both are
members of the same work group, but they just cant see each other.
really wierd! I didn't have this problem with an all W2k network.
Any other ideas?

Can either system ping the other? Is the XP systems Internet Connection Firewall enabled?

Nope can't ping. I have the firewall on the XP box disabled, but I'm
using Zone Alarm (free version) on both machines. I do allow them to
ping when ZA askes for permission. Still cant map network drives.

Turn ZA off and see if it works that way, if so then you know ZA is
the problem. If not then the problem is in the settings.
