Can't get printer to work properly

I just purchased new computer with windows xp & can't get a printer to work properly. Have tried 2 - compac IJ200 wich was supposed to be compatible with lexmark & usable with windows xp. Not so. Now tried cannon BJC-4300. It prints sometimes- some parts of page. Also, shoots out extra papers every time. Do I need to buy a new printer now or can I get one of these to work? and how? I've downloaded drivers for the cannon & it is loaded into my computer but seems to do it's own thing, not what I want it to do

Uninstall and then reinstall... Don't know about the IJ200 but the Canon
4xxx series work fine in XP.... unless the drivers are corrupted. Use the
drivers from the Canon website.
