Can't drag and drop into Drive E

G

Guest

Suddenly, for no reason I can discern, I am unable to drag and drop any file
into Drive E, where my DVD Burner is located, where a DVD awaits and where
I've been burning stuff for a few years.

I can copy from Drive D to this DVD in Drive E and I can also burn onto it
with an ISO file.

However, if I try to drag and drop any file, be it large video files or a
word processor file, onto Drive E then XP bluntly states that it failed to
copy the file.

I am running SP2 with all the updates - the most recent of which was a few
days ago at most. I have done a few system restores, to hop back before the
last few XP updates - with no effect. I have checked the space available on C
drive (21.0 GB).

I can't think of anything!

I have a Dimension 8250.

Any thoughts on why this might have started happening would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Neary.

I have made a modicum of progress. The problem doesn't exist if I use a CD!
I have always burnt CDs and DVDs in this drive - but when I'm burning files I
guess I've always used CD's as no files were too big.

As burning ISO's to DVD or copying DVDs was no problem, and as I could burn
files to CD... I saw no reason why I wouldn't be able to burn files to DVD. I
see no reason, I should say.

But apparently that's what's causing the problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

What burning software are you using? It may have to be reinstalled.

Hi Graham,

What were you using to copy to disk? If it was the native burning function,
then run services.msc and see if the imapi burning service is enabled. If it
was third party software, check that it is still loading at boot (run
msconfig, check the startup tab).

Hi! I'm having the SAME problem! My drive E is my DVD-RW / CD-RW, but i
can't copy ANY kind of file to it! (I'm trying to copy several .jpg images).
I've tried COPY, COPY TO, etc, but when i do, i just get

E:\ not accessible. Incorrect function

I checked services.msc - the imapi burning service was stopped, and i
started it and rebooted; nothing. I've deleted all my tmp files & ran defrag.

The weird thing about this is that i have Real One, and CAN play cds from
this drive AND RECORD music cds! When i run TROUBLESHOOTING, it says DEVICE
IS WORKING PROPERLY.

When i put a BLANK cd-r in the drive and look at the properties, the SPACE
AV = 0 !
Shouldn't there be a number there, showing that i have a lot of space to
write on?

When i my computer/right click on cd drive/properties, there IS NO
"recording tab"!

There are 3 tabs: general-play-hardware. NOTHING says "recording"!
TYPE: cd drive FILE SYSTEM: RAW

Evidently, a LOT of people are having the same kind of problem..........this
used to work a month ago. ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you,
Norm Vogel

I bought my system (Sony Vaio) at a computer store.........all drives were
already installed. (So, i presume that dvd software is installed). BUT.....
I've NEVER used my system to record DVDs......just CD-Rs.

I used to be able to take ANY file, and drag it over to that drive, and it
would put it on the CD-R. It just doesn't do it any more.

Hi! I went here

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529&Product=winxp

Modified the registry key, and now my CD/RW drive is showing a RECORD tab!

I tried to drag some imgs to the E drive, and that activated the "cd burning
wizard".
It said,YOU HAVE FILES TO BE WRITTEN TO THE CD.

When i started the burning process, it asked for a disc name (to be written
on the cd), but then said, "there is no cd in this drive".........but, there
IS! I tried several!

What would be causing THIS?

See comment directly above...........

I notice that, after changing the win registry (as per above), i can now get
the win cd copy wizard to work..........it NOW shows "files to be copied onto
cd".

But, when i try to do this, it says there is no cd-r in the drive (there IS!).

I went to services.msc, and the service status says STOPPED. I start it
back up, APPLY, and OK.

when i try to copy the files onto cd again, it's status keeps going into
STOPPED!!!!

What could be causing this?

Thank you,

"WinXP does not natively support DVDs. Have you installed software that will
write to DVDs?"

There's my answer, right there.

I can drag and drop a file onto E and burn it onto a CD. But try doing same
with a DVD and it's NO, SORRY!

I have a DVD Burner but XP won't let me drag and drop onto a DVD.

Time to switch back to a Mac, I think..

His problem is sort of like MINE. i can't drag/drop .jpg (or any other)
files to my CD-RW.

It says "no cd in drive', and the IMAPI goes into STOPPED.

I don't know. It's a NEC DVD+RW ND 1100A.

Any recommendations for tweaks/software that would allow me to perform this
simple task?

Thanks again.

I assume you are using packet-writing. What packet-writing software you
use?
AFSIK, InCD from Nero only supports DVD-rewritable disc. You have to use
dvd+rw or dvd-rw and FORMAT the disc before copying files.

Good luck!!

It's gets worse. I started a thread, explained myself carefully and now I
must reproduce whatever I refer too? I got onto this newsgroup to navigate a
design flaw and encounter yet another design flaw.

A few months back I was on this forum asking whether OE could notify me of
messages without my needing to open it up and got castigated for even
expecting such a thing.

I'm not returning to this thread or newsgroup, so go on. Say what you wish
about my attitude.

I have a different idea of computer design and will never by a PC again..
I'll stick to Macs..
