Can't delete phantom Add-in

I am using Office 2007 Ultimate under XP SP3. I was using Symantec Anti-Virus
("SAV") 10.1 (Small Business Edition) to scan emails. I uninstalled SAV and
installed Norton Anti-Virus 2008 in its place. Now, the first time I try to
open an email after opening Outlook 2007, I get the following error: "The
Add-in 'Symantec AntiVirus 10.1' (C:\Program
Files\Symantec_Client_Security\Symantec AntiVirus\vpmsece4.dll) cannot be
loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in
manufactuer for an update. If no update is available, please uninstall the
Add-in."

Outlook shows no Add-ins with this name (disabled or otherwise) in the
Trusted Add-in list. There is obviously some vestigial part of Symantec
AntiVirus hanging around but I cannot find it, and Symantec cannot help me,
other than supplying a manual procedure to remove the product, which was
ineffective. I have done the following:
1. Uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus.
2. Followed SAV 10.1 manual removal procedure, including removal of every
reference to Symantec in the registry. Before even doing this I checked and
found that there was no reference to vpmsece4.dll in the the registry (nor
was it present anywhere on the hard drive, nor does the dll name occur [in
readable form] within any file on the drive other than the original
installation log - which references a now-deleted folder), nor was the
Symantec folder present on my hard drive.
3. Ran Office 2007 Ultimate "Repair" option from Control Panel.

Still get the error message. How do I get Outlook to stop looking for this
deleted Add-in? Do I need to uninstall Outlook and reinstall it, or will that
even make a difference?

Interesting...that qualifies as a jump from a frying pan into a deep fat
fryer. Uninstall Norton and then run their debris removal tool; Norton's
uninstaller leaves a good deal of crud behind:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Once that's done, you can re-install Norton WITHOUT any of it's email
scanning components. Email scanning on anything but the email server,
itself, WILL eventually create problems,. You do net need email scanning,
it is redundant, it does nothing but create problems, and your system will
be fully protected without it, provided you keep the file system scanner up
to date.
