Can't Defrag OR run chkdsk

Tried to defrag. Says "run ckdsk /f". Got "Can't lock". Re-ran at re-boot.
Retried defrag. Says "more than one instance unsupported", but I only HAD one
instance going. Tried chkdsk again. Says volume in use by another process.
Went to task mngr. Can't find anything else running that would be doing this.
Downloaded a snap-in 'fix' from another link, here, and now the defragger
AUTOMATICALLY gives me a popup window saying it's in use. Everything's
"greyd" out & I can't even click anywhere or ANYTHING now!!!! GRRRRRR!!!!!!
What on earth do I do NOW?!?!?!

Unforftunately you will need to remove the snap-in, as it
is possibly causing more problems tan helping. btw - have a
look at raxco perfect disk. Its a gold certified M$ partner.
This program hasn't failed me yet.

Hi!
Now I can't seem to figure out how to undo the snap-in. I saw a link for the
raxco, earlier, too & wanna probably try that. I'm just leary about instaling
much else until I'm actually able to defrag afterward again.
Thanks for the reply. I'm running a Windows Update right now. Is the next
link I should follow http://raxco.com ?
