HI, I JUST FOUND THIS NEWSGROUP & AM FINDING SOME HELP HERE, THANKS. I
RECENTLY RESTORED MY LAPTOP & HAD NO PROBLEM DEFRAGING UNTIL I INSTALLED THE
WINDOWS PAK 2 & THEIR 28 UPDATES. NOW WHEN I TRY TO DEFRAG I GET THE
FOLLOWING MESSAGE. "DEFRAGMENTATION OF "C:" HAS BEEN ABORTED DUE TO
INCONSISTENCIES THAT WERE DETECTED IN THE FILE SYSTEM. PLEASE RUN CHKDSK OR
SCANDSK ON "C:" TO REPAIR THESE INCONSISTENCIES, THEN RUN DEFRAG AGAIN". I'VE
RAN CHKDSK SEVERAL TIMES & AFTER IT COMPLETES THE RUN I STILL CAN'T DEFRAG.
ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS. I DON'T HAVE TO MUCH COMPUTER EXPERIENCE. THANKS IN
ADVANCE

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
1.Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
2.Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3.Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4.Use one of the following procedures: •To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
*(edit: use the 2 following procedures in your situation)*
•To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
•To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Touch Base has commented on chkdsk.

You need 15% of free disk space on the drive / partition you are trying to
defragment.

To investigate how you are using hard disk space you need to make sure that
you can see all files. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View,
Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is
unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should
also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types"
is not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected
and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total
Size, and Free Space.

You should also run Disk Clean Up before running Disk Defragmenter or
chkdsk. It helps
remove potential problems.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your Recycle Bin and
Remove Temporary Internet Files. Whenever you remove redundant files you
should always run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

To increase you free space on your C select Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and
remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore points can be quite
large.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much Touch Base for your help & information. I did what you
said & it worked great. Sorry for typing in caps, I'm disabled & it's easier
& faster for me to type that way, but I won't anymore. I appreciate your time
in helping me.

Glad it worked out for you Jeanne. Yes, there is lots to learn.

Have a look through this info, you could pick up a few tips. http://defendingyourmachine.blogspot.com/

There is quite a lot of stuff in that article so have some time set apart to have a look, it's not a 5 minute job. Maybe save it to your favourites and come back to it now and then because it's sure to lead you off to other interesting sites.

Hi Touch Base, Thank you again for all your helpful information. I was
wondering if I could e-mail you personally about a couple of computer
questions, about no sound coming from my computer. Is that allowed? If so my
e-mail address is (e-mail address removed). That is a fantastic website you gave
me, yes I''ll take my time checking it out. I appreciate you going the extra
mile for me.
