Can't connect to web sites

Luigi

Suddenly all I can connect to is my home page set in my browser
(excite.com). Cannot connect to any other site. E-mail client downloads
e-mail fine. Any ideas? The only thing I changed was I uninstalled Norton
System Works and Internet Security bacause they weren't working very well.

Hi Luigi,

Before someone can help you with a problem like this we'll need some
other information.

How are you connected to the internet? Dialup modem, DSL with USB modem
or with ethernet? or Cable Internet with DHCP? Also, are you using a
router?

Clear your Internet Explorer cache. Since excite.com is probably your
home page it is probably cached in your browser's data files. This page
may show up and make it appear you're connected when you're really not.
From the Command prompt (Start>Programs>Accessories>CommandPrompt) type
"ping www.google.com" (or any other website you want) and "ping
www.yahoo.com" -- see if you can reach them. You'll know because it
will give you a list of connect-to times. If you get "timeout" or
"unknown host" you probably are not connected (although routing and
firewall issues can cause this).

Also, type "ipconfig /all" at the command line and let us know what
you're getting.

Thanks,

Harlin Seritt

Nortons eh ? well that figures, either removing NIS mucked up or
you have allowed something nasty into your system since
uninstalling it, then browsing the web if you didn't have any other
AV protection.[almost catch 22].
Start by running the following
Ad-Aware, CW Shredder and Sysclean, if you can get them from a
colleague since you have no Internet access.
You could also try running the winsock fix
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
