IE 8 - How can I get Internet auto connect without recurring box?

I recently installed IE 8 on my Windows XP SP2 Home system, and
suddenly something was broken that had been working smoothly.

Before: I would double-click on my browser icon (Firefox, though I
suspect the same would be true of IE or any other) and it would open,
together with the auto-dialup box to connect to my ISP. After the
connection was completed, my home page would come up and I could go
about my browsing.

After: The same, EXCEPT that every few seconds some sort of Connect
dialogue box comes up. I can't tell exactly what it says because it
goes away quickly. But it's very distracting! Why is it even needed if
the connection has been established?

After doing some Googling, I learned that I could stop the recurring
box by checking "Never Dial a Connection" in IE's Internet Properties
Connect tab. That made the box go away, but now I don't have the
automatic connect when I start my browser. I have to start the dialup
connect process manually, and only after it's done can I open my
browser.

Question to the Department of If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Is
there anything I can do in IE 8, or anywhere else, to get things
working like they were before?

Try the other option "Dial whenever a network connection is not present". It
works for me.
