OK, see if anyone can fix this.

Im running IE6 on XP.

There are sites that i simply cannot access such as,
www.my4x4.co.uk or www.argos.co.uk

All i get is the frustrating Page Cannot Be Displayed
page. GRRRRRRRR

Im connected to the net by a (norton) firewalled DSL line.

Ive cleaned out every cookie, ive restarted IE, and the
computer many many times, ive tried it in safe mode, ive
shut the comp down to its bare .exe components. Ive lost
count of the times ive run my (fully updated) anti-virus
software. Although i can access those 2 sites via AOL
software, connected through my DSL line and using AOL's
browser.

One more thing - although i dont know if this is
connected at all, every few hours a fresh IE window opens
up with Google, needless to say Google is not my home
page.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Any further ideas?

cewebsites

Just wanted you to know your not alone. We have at least
2 clients experiencing the same difficulty. They too are
running IE6 on XP. The site they are trying to access is
www.spectacularvacations.com (the home page loads, but
none of the linked pages unless they too are set in
frames). We can view the websites, but we don't have the
same configurations. We can view it using IE6 on 98, ME,
and 2000.

Hopefully, someone will have some ideas for us.

I've been working on this for over 24 hours.

I seem to have this problem as well. I am running IE6 on
Windows XP. A site I visit frequently, www.soa.org, has
recently been redesigned and now I cannot access most of
the content. I can go to all of the main pages on this
site, but any time I try to access more specific content
I get the message "Sorry the page you are trying to view
is not here", though the menus and stuff still appear.

I have tried opening these pages in Mozilla Firefox and I
have absolutely no problems. Another strange thing that
happened: I had an acquaintance go to the page I wanted
and send me the link through ICQ. When I clicked on the
link in the ICQ window, the page opened just fine in
Internet Explorer, and I was able to access that page
through the normal links from then on. Everything else
remained unaccessible to me.

I have installed and run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. I have
looked at the HOSTS file. My problem remains. Any
suggestions?

One final note: I have tried going to the sites mentioned
in the 2 previous messages (www.spectacularvacations.com,
www.my4x4.co.uk, www.argos.co.uk) and I have no
problems...

Will this even end

OK, ive had a lot of time downloading (even on a DSL).

I did have quite a load of spyware on my PC, but its gone
now, and i'll keep checking just to make sure.

I downloaded cwsshredder, updated it, ran it, and it says
my system is clean.

The my4X4.co.uk site did work briefly yesterday, but
stopped today. It refused to work after hibernating -
connection? Also im getting a connection problem with
outlook express, could that be connected with this
problem too?

These tools were also recommanded by Frank Saunders.
Run them more than once. Read also on securing you computer.

This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware, parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

Did a HOSTS file get created again?

As a last resort, get help from this forum.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

I am ALSO having this problem! I can't access lawschool.lexis.com - I can get to the home page, login okay, but then I get "this page cannot be displayed" when I try to navigate anywhere. I've done all the things mentioned in this post but no problems have been found. One difference is - I am experiencing this problem on my laptop and when I connect at school (wireless), I don't have this problem - only when I am connecting at home (DSL). I've done everything I can think of (and read SO MANY posts) but nothing has fixed it so far.

When will this ever end

Yes I did see you post but you would be surprise to find out what can still
be found after on trial to remove spywares.

In your post you said
"The my4X4.co.uk site did work briefly yesterday, but stopped today. It
refused to work after hibernating - connection?"

This may help.
Unable to Log on to Web Site or Gain Access to Some Web Site Services
You may not be able to log on to a particular Web site or gain access to

The AutoDial Procedure Stops If You Quit Internet Explorer
When Internet Explorer performs an AutoDial procedure, the Internet Explorer
window and the Dial-Up Connection dialog box are displayed. If you configure
the AutoDial feature to automatically connect, the AutoDial procedure
starts. When this occurs, you can quit Internet Explorer. If you do this,
the Dial-Up Connection dialog box closes. Because the connection is not
established, the modem dials, negotiates line speed, and then stays
connected until an Internet service provider (ISP) timeout occurs and quits
the connection.
