im using another pc to write this i have some weird problems.
im running windows xp and can get connected to the internet ok, but cant get
into most sites, now i cant get on any at all. i get the error "this page
cannot be displayed" and when i can get on a site when i try to get on this
site for help i get the message "your security settings prohibit you from
running active x" my settings are ok, and ive rang the server (wanadoo) and
its not a problem with them, neither is it a problem with firewall. three
times when ive connected ive managed to get one page to show and after that
nothing. i have spybot and adaware and have had my pc checked its 100% clean.
anyone got any ideas please? its a new pc and i havent downloaded sp2 (not
that i can anyway) even the people at wanadoo are puzzled. thanks in advance.

Have you checked your Hosts table ?, Which AntiVirus are you
running ? Along with Spybot and AdAware you should also do
a run with CWShredder. If you open a command prompt and do
an IPConfig which DNS server and Gateway are defined in the
details ? If you ping the DNS and Gateway do you get 3 replies
and how fast do they return ( in Milliseconds).
As to IE, I would simply reset all 4 Zones to their Default
security settings.
If Broadband does the modem itself have NAT/Firewall capabilities
and have you accessed the web interface to check it's setup ?

Hosts is a table that maps names to IP addresses. For example it
might show an entry such as:

Cnn.com 64.236.16.84

The Hosts file translates all references to cnn.com to it's IP address
at 64.236.16.84 ( Think of it as a Web site's Telephone number).
Normally, all ISP's employ a Gateway Server. This is a access
point for your computer to get access to the Internet. A DNS server
acts like a Hosts file, it translates all URL (Universal Resource
Locators) to their IP Addresses so data packets can get to their
destinations and return the information you've requested.
A ping is like a "Tap on the Shoulder" for networking. You send
a packet to a web site and it (if allowed) will respond to your Ping.
It tests that your pathway from your PC to the Internet is working.

A normal network test would be the following steps:
1. Click Start, Run (type) Command [Press Enter]
2. Click inside the Command prompt box to give it focus
3. Type Ipconfig [Press Enter]
The machine will return the assigned IP configuration data for
your Network Interface Card (NIC). As long as the IP address
does not start with 169, you should be OK. The actual IP will
vary depending on whether you modem has Router capabilities.
4. Write down the DNS Server and Gateway Addresses & IP
Address
5. Type Ping DSLReports.com [Press Enter]
DSLReports.com accepts Ping packets
6. If your PC is connected to the web properly, it will indicate 0%
data loss. This means your PC can talk to the web.
If those steps work, then there are other reasons why your browser
cannot display web pages.

Try those steps & repost results.
