Canon PIXMA MP780 - specified port is unknown

I have a Canon MP780 multi-function machine that I've not been able to
succesfully connect. I receive a "specified port is unknown" message
when I try to connect the device to my Asus laptop via USB.

The laptop has the latest BIOS. I'm running XP Professional.

I have been able to successfully connect the MP780 to my 4 year old
Compaq 700 Presario laptop running XP Home.

Help!

Thanks,

Did you install the software before you connected the printer to the USB
port? If not, I suggest that you uninstall any drivers currently installed
for the printer, unplug the USB cable from the computer and turn the printer
off, then exit and restart Windows.

Now install the drivers that shipped with the printer or download them from
Canon and install these. With the printer turned on, connect the USB cable
to the computer when prompted.

If the printer is not recognized, try a different USB cable to see if this
is the problem. Or if you are using a USB hub, disconnect it and connect
this directly to your computer until you get it installed and recognized. I
recently had a USB hub go flaky on me. A new hub resolved my USB problems.
