Unknown Device Error (USB Printer installation problem)

I just bought a new Canon MF-4150 printer (AIO) which I am trying to install
on my desktop computer, HP Pavillion a340n 2.8 GHz Pent/HT, running XP SP2
more detailed spec are at the link below, however, it won't recognize the
printer via the usb connection? In Device Manager it shows it as an "unknown
device". I am running XP SP2 and the specs on my computer are at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...505&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=374776&lang=en
After I was able to connect the same printer without any problem, to my Dell
laptop (XPpro-SP2), Canon tech support say it has to be something with the
computer or sys software, and they basically abandoned me.
I have tried everything I can think of to remedy this including:
Unstalling the the USB device drivers that came on the computer and
uninstalling the Canon installation disk drivers (which Canon says are
identical to the XP drivers) then connecting the printer to the computer and
restarting letting XP install the drivers. I've tried updating the driver in
Device Manager, I have been walked through a selective start-up driver
install, nothing seems to work.
I have tried several different USB ports on the computer, I have used these
same ports to connect other devices and had no problem installing them or
with XP recognizing them.
When I look at the "unknown device" properties in device manager under
general, it says no drivers are installed for this device, however, when I
click on the driver tab for this same device, it says Driver provider:
mocrosoft, Driver Date: 7/1/2001, Driver Version: 5.1.2600.0, Digital Signer:
MS Win Publisher?
Also, sometimes if I delete the enhanced host controller - 24DD under USB
Controllers in Device Manager with the printer connected, xp will try to
re-install it and it DOES RECOGNIZE the printer and at that point the printer
works perfectly. However, if I put the computer to sleep or re-boot it I am
back to square one.
Any Suggestions??
thanks in advance

Looks like you "put the cart before the horse".
You must install the software first before connecting the printer to your PC.
While installing the software you'll be prompted when to connect it and
when to turn it on.
