Cannot use e-mail links

P

Pam

Can any one help please.

I have recently upgraded from Outlook Express to Outlook
2003 (via Office 2003) and whenever I click on an e-mail
link on a website I get a message saying "cannot perform
requested operation as mail client
is not the default client or is incorrectly installed".
When this message is cleared approximately 62 blank web
pages come on the screen and freeze up IE 6.0. I have
checked the settings in IE 6.0 and it says the default
client is Outlook, I have also checked the settings in
Outlook which also says that it is the default client. I
have also tried re-installing Outlook all to no avail. Can
anyone out there sort this problem. I am running XP

Thanks

Pam

Pam,

Type the following command in the RUN box:

regedit /e c:\export.reg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

Then, open C:\export.reg and post the contents here.

Thanks for reply

Have put the first line in the RUN box, pressed OK and
nothing happened. Then put 2nd line in the RUN box pressed
OK and got message to say "could not find file". A quick
search of all files and folders (including system and
hidden) revealed NO files or folders with "export" in the
name.

Any other ideas?

If the 1st command has executed correctly (?), the file "export.reg" should appear in C:\

If it's not available, open Registry Editor and post the contents of the key manually. Type regedit.exe in the RUN box and open Registry Editor. Navigate to the location below:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command

Use the File, Export option and save the branch as a REG file. Open the REG file in NotePad and post the contents here.

Similarly, the whole branch here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Clients\Mail

I could reproduce the problem after running a couple of tests. Clicking on mailto: link opened 61 Internet Explorer windows and the mail client did not open.

Open the Registry Editor and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto

In the right-pane, there must be a REG_SZ named "URL Protocol" (without quotes) and the problem is fixed.

Ok have checked username and passwords for all accounts
and all looks OK. Can send and receive mail fine via
Outlook, the problem only occurs when trying to use a link
in IE6.

For Ramesh - I have opened the Registry Editor and under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT there is no folder called "mailto"

You will have that entry, Pam. If not, use the instructions here:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/MailtoProtocol.htm
And create a REG file (save as "filename.reg") and double-click it. Then, set the default mail client again (if need be).

Pam,

I am sorry to jump in here but have you checked details of your ISP etc
including your Username and email account in Outlook? Many times I have
found that when automatic import takes place this info is invariably
incorrect and so the link is not possible.
