No default mail client???

B

Betty

After a recent crash I reinstalled Windows XP Pro, SP 2 and all the Windows
updates. When trying to send a page by e-mail, send a link by e-mail or
write a new message from Internet Explorer I get the message "Either there
is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the
messaging request. Please run MS Outlook and set it as the default mail
client". I do not want to use Outlook as I prefer Outlook Express. Tools,
Options, Programs shows that my e-mail client is Outlook Express.

So far I've tried setting the program access and defaults, and using
Ramesh's DefaultMail v2.2 from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultmail.htm.
Nothing seems to help. I simply cannot get IE to recognize Outlook Express
as my dafault mail client. Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Thank you so much, PA Bear. I finally had to edit the registry as per
instructions at the link you sent http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098
Whew! I hate getting into the registry but the instructions were so nice
and easy to follow that it was very easy to do. Your help is much
appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion. It would be good to get rid of MS Outlook. I
checked into it and unfortunately I don't seem to have that option when I
click the Change button in Add-Remove programs. It seems I would have to
completely uninstall MS Office XP Small Business and of course I don't want
to do that. No problem I guess if I can't uninstall Outlook. At least I
now know how to get Outlook Express back as my email client.

No, you should be able to Remove Outlook via the Change button, Betty,
without having to reinstall Office. Your Office CD might be required,
though.

If all else fails, change your Automatic Updates configuration to Notify
Only. That way, you'll have to approve what's downloaded as well as what's
installed. When you see an Outlook update in the list, uncheck it and then
hide it.

And if you're using Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update, switch to
the latter.

I tried again to remove Outlook using the Change button but still no luck.
Weird! I always keep Automatic Updates set to Notify only and then I use
Custom so I know exactly what's being installed. So it wouldn't have been a
problem to hide the Outlook updates but I decided I didn't want to have to
think about it anymore. Guess I did it the hard way but I completely
uninstalled MS Office and then did a custom install omitting Outlook. I did
have to tell IE again to use Outlook Express for email.

Thanks for all the help and advice, PA Bear. All is well now.
