Cannot upgrade from 98se to xphome...

I am trying to upgrade from win98 se to xp home. During the initial phase,
Collecting Information, I get the error window
Empty 60g drive except for the OS. 192 M memory, Celeron

"The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because Setup was
unable to load the file
D:\i386\win9xupg\win95upg.dll". A device attached to the system is not
functioning"

D is the CD drive

Could this be the CD drive? Even though I was able to install win98se?
Is there a reference or fix for this type of error?

I am thinking of copying all files to the hard drive and then initiating
setup.

thanks

When I quit the SEtup, I get an error window that says:

"Setup cannot continue because upgrade functionality has been disabled and
your copy of Windows XP only allows upgrades?"

Can this be a BIOS issue?

thx

If you have your data from 98 backed up to CD-Rs, put the XP Home CD into
the CD tray and turn off the computer. Turn it back on (hopefully it will
boot from your CD). Run setup from there. Be sure to have setup format
your hard drive using NTFS.

Just remember this, if you have any problems in Windows 98, they will still
be there more than likely in Windows XP if you upgrade within Windows 98.
Booting from the XP CD is the best way to install XP.

OK move over sherriff this is the Bandit.

If you don't have Roxio and are still getting this message, then copy the
entire folder \i386 from the CD to a partition or folder on the hard drive.

Under Windows 98, run the file winnt32.exe, this will launch the
installation process.
