Cannot save required file extension in 'Save As Type' box.

When scanning a document into my computer (Xp Pro +SP2) using a fairly new
Hewlett-Packard PSC1215, all goes well - until I have to 'save' the scanned
file.

HP tells me that to use their (included) OCR programme files must have a
*.tif / *.pcx or *.bmp file extension. However, when I get to the 'Save As'
box I am given just four options:-

Rich TextFile (*.rtf)
TEXT File (*.txt)
PDF (*.pdf)
HTML (*.htm)

Whilst there is an 'Options' button at the bottom rhs of the 'Save As' box,
this is 'greyed out' and cannot be used.

You will appreciate that I cannot therefore select a *.tif / *.pcx or *.bmp
as the file type with which to save my scan!

Has anone any idea of how I can adjust matters so that I CAN chose the
appropriate file extension?

The output from an OCR program is text and should be stored in a format
supporting the editing of text, e.g., .txt, .rtf.

Thank you for answering so quickly SiS. However, I don't think you understood
my question! (or, perhaps I didn't make the problem clear enough).

It is at the time when the scan is complete, and ready to be saved, that I
meet the problem.

I've not yet even been able to try and use the OCR programme - I cannot save
any files with which to 'feed' it!

Have you any other suggestions?

Maybe contact HP support, it's their product and software.

Wow! I thought of that too! I'm currently waiting for a response from HP.
Thanks, though, for your input - everything helps!

That suggests that the OCR has already been invoked, and is asking what
format to use for the converted text. The spec for bmp etc would be if
you had a graphics file you wanted to convert and were trying to read
that in from hard disk

Hi Alex - sorry for the delay in my response.

I hear what you say. However, I have not actually tried to use the OCR
programme at all (ReadIris 7.5) - it just happened to be suplied with the
instalation software for my PSC 1215 from Hewlett-Packard! I noted from the
'Read Me' folder that the ReadIris programme could only recognise certain
types of file.

When I scanned a document with the PSC 1215, my PC would not allow me to
save the scaned file in the format which could, subsequently, be recognised
by the ReadIris programme.

I do not believe that there is any connection between the two.

I have been in touch with Hewlett-Packard but, to date (apart from
suggesting a reinstalation of their software - which I have carried out) no
positive or constructive reason has been forthcoming.

I will add another post if I do determine a solution!
