"Save As" file extension problem

Hi all, I am running Vista and office 2007. Whenever i receive an email and
do a "save as" and try to add anything to the file name it always saves off
the file as some unknown extension.

For instance I have a pdf I receive called pic1.pdf, when I save it off as
pic it removes the extension .pdf and so the file is unable to open until i
readd the extension.

Any idea why the save as feature is doing this? Never had this problem in
XP. Also I dont have "show file extension for known file types turned on"

Just to clarify: You are trying to save email attachments, right? Not the
emails themselves.
I could be wrong, but I don't think it's possible to directly receive an
email as a pdf. The pdf has to be attached to the email.
I realize this sounds like nit-picking, but it isnt. We need to clarify what
it is you're trying to save.

For example, if I get an email and try to save it using "save as," adding
the pdf extension will not magically transform it into a pdf.

Also, you didn't say if you're using Windows Mail, Outlook, etc. Since you
mention Office, I assume you're using Outlook; though my assumption may be
wrong.

Sorry for the confusion, yes the file is an attachment. Have the problem
with any file type, pdf, jpg, ai, word, excel. And yes I am using Outlook.

I haven't used Outlook in a while, so I've forgotten the methodology. When
you click on the attachment (or the link to the attachment) does it ask you
if you want to open the attachment or save it?
And if you choose save it asks you to name the document. Is there another
window under the name that shows you what TYPE of file it's saving? And if
so, does it give you the option to change it? There may be a default file
type Outlook wants to save it at. And if you don't change that file type it
won't do it regardless of what the extension is. (I'm just guessing here.)

One other thing. There used to be a trick in XP and earlier Windows. I'm not
sure if it's carried over to Vista or not. And even if it has, I'm not sure
if it applies to Outlook attachments. The trick was that when it came time
to save something, if you put the whole file name in quotes, such as
"abe.txt," Windows would save it as the appropriate file type to match the
extension. So if you had a text document up in Notepad and saved it as
"abe.doc", the next time you opened it by doubleclicking, it would
automatically open in Word instead of Notepad.
Just as a workaround, you might try saving the attachment by putting the
filename.extension in quotes. That may defeat whatever is happening in
Outlook. It's not an elegant solution, and you'd probably want to find a
permanent solution. But at least it may help you in the interim (if it even
works at all).

when you right click the file and hit save as to get it out of outlook it
will save the file fine if you dont change the file name, but now in outlook
2007 (unless its a vista thing) if you change the file name it will remove
the file extension and the file type becomes unknown. now if you manually
rename your file from say test.pdf to test2.pdf you have to type in the
extension, which before you didnt have to do that.

I have been trying to get an answer to this for months. Still have not been
successful. Also, I am trying to find a way to make the Save As folder a
default of my choosing instead of having to jump through the directory hoops
to get where I want to save that file that does not have an extension.
