cannot open volume for direct access

I ran into the problem described in KB823439
titled '"Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access" Error
Message When Chkdsk Runs at Startup.'
Now every time I startup my computer it tries to run
chkdsk with the same problem. How do I turn it off so
that I can startup without chkdsk trying to run?

Then you did note the Status line:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this
article when the information becomes available.

See if any information here helps per your latter question:

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be caused by
my ZoneAlarm firewall. If you use ZoneAlarm, it may be
the same for you. Check out the Zone Labs User Forum for
more information on this issue. There is a fix described
at http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/faqs/faqs.asp#gq0
that will allow chkdsk to successfully run at bootup.

Good luck!
