Need Help with Problem : Cannot open volume for direct access

G

Guest

Please help. I keep getting the message "Cannot open volume for direct
access" upon startup. Chkdsk will not run in any mode.

Any attempt to run chkdsk manually gives a messgae it needs exclusive access
to the disk.

I have service pack 2. I have read that that is the fix but apparently not.

Does anyone know what programs may be locking the disk?

What are the fixes?

Thanks

Hi,

Sometimes this is caused by disk utilities like Roxio's GoBack. The solution
is to boot from the WinXP CD and load the Recovery Console, then run chkdsk
from there. If you just want to cancel the attempts, run chkntfs /d from a
command prompt to clear the bit that prompts for the autochk.
