Cannot open links in IE6

So I'll give you the whole history.
I have an old Pentium 2 running XP Pro 5.1 Service Pack 1. Yes - I know it's
old but I only really had it to rip and burn Cd's and load my iPod.
It also has Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2. Recently got broadband at
home so hooked it up and - surprise surprise - it worked. Remembering this
machine hadn't been on the Internet for four years or so, I downloaded a
whole bunch of security updates, XP hotfixes, etc. Thanks to
elephanyboycomputers, also downloaded Ad-Aware, Spybot and Sysclean to check
for spyware etc.

The first issue was the svchost process hogging the CPU at random times
while on the 'Net. Thanks to these discussion groups, this has been
alleviated by turning off the Auto Update function.

Next, the Windows XP theme suddenly changed to the Classic theme. Again I
trolled these discussion groups for an answer, but this time to no avail.
I've let that one slide.

So now this problem which has shown itself literally overnight. i.e. could
do it one afternoon, but not the next morning, on a machine that usually
stays turned on and connected.
I can open Internet Explorer. My home page comes up as usual. I can click on
addresses in the drop-down box and they will open. I can click on addresses
in the history box or my favourites and they will open. It's when I click on
an embedded link (e.g. like the underlined blue ones in these discussion
posts) that the problem arises. Usually when clicking a link there will be an
audible 'click'. On these occasions, there is no 'click', the 'hand' cursor
shows up, the link address will be in the bar across the bottom of the
screen, but that's all she wrote. No progress bar, nothing. After about a
minute or so, the normal cursor will be back and I can carry on. Except I
can't do what I want to do. It'll work on some links, but not on others. It
seems to not work on links that are underlined but I think this is me being
naive.
As per other posts, if I copy and paste the address straight into the
address bar, it will work.
As per previous, I scoped these forums for a couple of days and tried all
the 'fixes' from MVP's Bruce Hagan, Frank Sauders and Wesley Vogel amongst
others.
- I've checked the File Types, turned DDE off, turned it back on
- been to www.fjsmjs.com and applied what I could
- restored the default settings of explorer
- checked the registry (regsvr32 urlmon.dll et al) as per Microsoft Support
- third party browsers were not enabled

This was a computer I brought off the company I work for and I don't have
the installation discs, so re-installing isn't an option.

Again I re-iterate, this happened overnight.
So I'm at my wits end. If anyone can help - if anyone is still reading after
this opus - I would be indebted.

Did you System restore to the date before this happened?.
You didn't say if you have Anti-Virus install or not and also if you have a
firewall?.
Open a run command and type in:
regedit click [OK] and locate this Key and see if the Prefixes are there as
in this Key:
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes=

"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

If it is there then try these one at a time please and see if your issue
will resolve:
1 = ... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.

[&] HTTP 1.1 Settings
[ ] Use HTTP 1.1 ,= Make sure this checked
[ ] Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections
If you using proxy check the proxy one if not check only the first one.

Then under Security Option:
[&] Security
[ ] Use SSL 2.0
[ ] Use SSL 3.0
[ ] Use STL 1.0
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

2= Then Open a run command and type in these DLLs to re-register them:
regsvr32 SOFTPUB.DLL
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 Dssenh.dll
regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll
Note you can copy the above and paste in a Notepad and Save As on the
Desktop reg.bat file then you can open a run command and type in:
C:\reg.bat click [OK] and then Yes.
Again on the Run command type in:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
Reboot your Machine.
3= Try to download this tool to refresh the winsock values:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html

4= Open the Windows
Explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc = look in the Right Pane/window for this
file called the HOSTS file but not the one with the extension *.SAM* leave
this as is.
If you can't see it try to click Tools >> Folder Options and select show
Hidden files and folder, then right Click the Hosts file and select open with
Notepad.
There see any reference for that site and remove it, you Hosts file will
looks like this:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # Source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # Client Host
127.0.0.1 LocalHost
------------------------------------------
Remove all other References other than those above try to Rename the Hosts
file to Hosts.Old and Reboot your computer.

5= Before we go further try to Turn your Modem OFF, try to
Power or unplug the Power cord for the Modem for about 40 seconds or
so be generous with it <g> turn the computer OFF and wait for the time to go
by!!.
Then Turn the Modem ON and wait a minute or so then Power ON the
computer and try to establish a connection and try the link, does it work?.

6= If still then continue the next step:
search for them by this name *index.dat* and you can delete them
then the on reboot the system will recreate them for you.
Some of them here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Cookies = index.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 = index
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Cookies = index
C:\Documents and settings\User\User data = index
C:\Windows\Temp\Cookies =index
C:\Windows\Temp\History = index
C:\Windows\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 = Index.dat

Thanks for replying.
I turned System Restore off when I started running out of disk space. And I
have a firewall on my modem/ router through my service provider. I don't have
a virus scanner but do run the three mentioned every day and keep them
updated.
I empty the cookies/ temporary and history caches after every time I use the
'net.

None of your suggestions worked.

One thing I didn't mentioned that may have a bearing. The latest update I
did was Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 from Microsoft Article
ID839174. This was in response to the themes problem I was having and in
trying to remedy ended up getting the error;
"Could not stop the themes service on the Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion."

I don't know if this is relevent but the links problem started just after.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mitch,
Okay, try and make sure your computer is clean from Viruses as the
applications you mentioned they are Anti-Spyware not Anti-Virus Programs.
1= Run a scan from here on-line:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Downloads/browseFreeRemovalTool/

Then download this AVG or Avast (they both) free, but you need only one on
the machine running in one time, so one is sufficient:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
http://www.avast.com

2= Then Open a run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK] on the services control panel make sure these
services started:

Service Name Status StartUp Type
1- Cryptographic Services Started Automatic
2- HTTP SSL Started Manual
3- Server Started Automatic
4- Themes Started Automatic

3= You receive an "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion" error message when a service that uses
the local system account tries to start on a Windows Server 2003-based
computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886695

Rad the article at the bottom which contain this text:
Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click
OK. The Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in opens.
In the right pane, locate the SampleWS service, and then start the service.
Stop or pause the SampleWS service.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839174/

If the Themes still doesn't function then try this fix:
4= Line 187- Restore Themes Functionality
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any error messages(X) that can help to
narrow down the issue if you still have any.
HTH.

Dc1.dll (JakposhC) in C:\RECYCLER\(lots of numbers)

(2) I didn't have the HTTP SSL service from your list to check. All others
were OK

(3) With regard to KB886695 and the Error 1053, I am not running a Windows
Server 2003-based computer (I don't think). In any case, I don't have Sample
WS in the services listing.

(4) With regard to the themes issue, I had already tried the Kellys-Korner
fixes. Along with every other thing I could find in these discussion boards.

So I still have the links issue. Here's an example.
Go to davidbowie.com and click on the News tab. Click on the news date 7
June. On that page I can click on any of the 'Special Features' links and be
taken to that page. I can click on any of the 'Ads by Google' and be taken to
that page. Down the bottom I can click on the 'join bowienet' link and be
taken to that page.
I can't click on the 'bowieNet Jukebox' or the 'bowieNet Newsletter' links.
The cursor will hang as the hand symbol for two minutes then revert back to a
normal cursor, but I stay on the News page. Same with any of the blue
highlighted links throughout the news item itself.

Hopefully from these examples someone can figure out why this is happening.

Thanks.

Hi Mitch,
Okay, try and make sure your computer is clean from Viruses as the
applications you mentioned they are Anti-Spyware not Anti-Virus Programs.
1= Run a scan from here on-line:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine:
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Downloads/browseFreeRemovalTool/

Then download this AVG or Avast (they both) free, but you need only one on
the machine running in one time, so one is sufficient:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
http://www.avast.com

2= Then Open a run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK] on the services control panel make sure these
services started:

Service Name Status StartUp Type
1- Cryptographic Services Started Automatic
2- HTTP SSL Started Manual
3- Server Started Automatic
4- Themes Started Automatic

3= You receive an "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion" error message when a service that uses
the local system account tries to start on a Windows Server 2003-based
computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886695

Rad the article at the bottom which contain this text:
Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click
OK. The Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in opens.
In the right pane, locate the SampleWS service, and then start the service.
Stop or pause the SampleWS service.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839174/

If the Themes still doesn't function then try this fix:
4= Line 187- Restore Themes Functionality
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any error messages(X) that can help to
narrow down the issue if you still have any.

ID839174. This was in response to the themes problem I was having and in
trying to remedy ended up getting the error;
"Could not stop the themes service on the Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion."

I don't know if this is relevent but the links problem started just after.

Thanks in advance.

"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[ ] Use STL 1.0
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

2= Then Open a run command and type in these DLLs to re-register them:
regsvr32 SOFTPUB.DLL
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll

C:\reg.bat click [OK] and then Yes.
Again on the Run command type in:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
Reboot your Machine.
3= Try to download this tool to refresh the winsock values:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html

4= Open the Windows
Explorer and locate this path:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc = look in the Right Pane/window for this
file called the HOSTS file but not the one with the extension *.SAM* leave
this as is.
If you can't see it try to click Tools >> Folder Options and select show
Hidden files and folder, then right Click the Hosts file and select open with
Notepad.
There see any reference for that site and remove it, you Hosts file will
looks like this:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # Source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # Client Host
127.0.0.1 LocalHost
------------------------------------------
Remove all other References other than those above try to Rename the Hosts
file to Hosts.Old and Reboot your computer.

5= Before we go further try to Turn your Modem OFF, try to
Power or unplug the Power cord for the Modem for about 40 seconds or
so be generous with it <g> turn the computer OFF and wait for the time to go
by!!.
Then Turn the Modem ON and wait a minute or so then Power ON the
computer and try to establish a connection and try the link, does it work?.

6= If still then continue the next step:
search for them by this name *index.dat* and you can delete them
then the on reboot the system will recreate them for you.
Some of them here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Cookies = index.dat
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 = index
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Cookies = index
C:\Documents and settings\User\User data = index
C:\Windows\Temp\Cookies =index
