cannot open google

Hi, since a couple of days sometimes IE6 does not open
google.com anymore. Instead I get a message (window
title "File Download" stating: "Some files can harm your
computer. If the file information below looks suspicious,
or you do not fully trust the source, do not open or save
this file. File name: google. File type: [-]. From:
www.google.nl. Would you like to open the file or save it
to your computer?" Options are: Open, Save, Cancel, More
Info (does not really help).

Next to the window with this messsage, I get another
window stating: "Getting File Information: / from google
[1]". It seems to be trying to download a file. I can save
it and it does not contain a virus. It won't open the
required google page.
Even if I save it and try to open it with IE.

I use IE6 with SP1 in Win 2000.

Anybody got any idea why I can't open google?

Hi Venkatesh,

"Unfortunately" no signs of any infection.

Today I manually deleted all the directories under
all "Temporary Internet Files". For the time being the
problem is gone...

Thanks!

Additional info: the behavior that I described below only
seems to occur if I type www.google.nl in the address bar.
If I include "http://" IE will open the web page.

Anybody got any idea what's going on?!?

Thanks, Goose

Check the below Registry entries vs. yours:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
Default="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Dear Frank,

I found an additional entry "(Default) --> (value not set)
in
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\URL\Prefixes]

Should I delete this entire entry or change its value
to "http://"?

Thanks for your assistance!
