Cannot Open .doc from Windows Mail with Office 2007 Installed

I Vista and using their mail program with office word installed it will not
let me open .doc files. I can open .xls, pdf, .jpg but not word files. I
have to save them in a folder then open them. It throws an error that there
is not a file associated with it. Here is what I have tried:
I looked at the file associations list and .doc is set to word.
I checked the security settings in the microsoft mail and it will allow
attachments

What the heck, any suggestions?

Tools | Options | Security
Under Virus Protection uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or
opened that may be a virus".
