cannot install or uninstall drivers

I recently upgraded my MB and CPU to Soyo KT-400 Dragon
Ultra and AMD Athlon XP2600+. After the upgrade the
onboard LAN (VIA PCI 10/100MB Fast Ethernet Adapter) was
not recognized by Windows XP. When I opened Device
Manager it showed the adapter as a Rhine II Fast Ethernet
Adapter. I tried manually installing the Adapter and
drivers but when I do I get a message saying that Windows
could not load the necessary driver. I then took another
network card from another computer running XP (that I
knew was working) and installed it thinking there was a
problem with the onboard LAN. Windows did not detect it
either upon boot but when I installed the drivers
manually it worked fine, BUT after downloading from
Windows Update and restarting the computer the adapter
had the yellow ! and Windows once again said it could not
load the necessary drivers. Also my IEEE 1394 devices
had the same message. When I went to My Network Places
all instances of my network were gone. Ihave tried a
repair install of XP. I have also tried to unistall the
drivers but Windows tells me that it cannot uninstall the
devices because they may be needed for bootup. By the
way I also have Windows ME installed on another partition
and all of my adapters are functioning properly on it.
Is there possibly something corrupt in the registry or
somewhere else? I have been working on this for 4 days
and at my wit's end. HELP!!!!!
