Cannot get Updates

I've been using MS Anti-spyware since October with Dial-up and had no
problems with updates. Changed to Verizon DSL with MSN Premium early
December and when checking for updates, I get "Cannot connect to the
internet". I've also, since getting DSL completed all Microsoft Updates
including Service Pack 2. I've tried uninstalling the Anti-spyware (both
thru Uninstal Spyware and the Add/Remove Programs) and downloaded the lates
and re-installed .
Still can't update. Any help is apprciated.
Thanks

Hi

This is probably a firewall setting.

Giantantispywaremain.exe must be permitted to run both
TCP and UDP.

This can be tricky within some firewalls to change.

Hi plun,
Thanks for getting back to me. I added MS Spyware to Window Firewall
Exceptions - N.G.; I tried turning off the Windows Firewall and doing an
update - N.G. You mention TCP and UDP - I am not familiar with that. could
you explain further please. Also, any other firewalls (or possibly pop-up
blocking?) that could be stopping me? Could the Spyware be still looking for
a Dial-up Connection??
Any and all help welcome.
Thanks.

There is one more solution, but I have to find it, if I get lucky I'll poste
here.

I found it.

Try this (Bill Sanderson):

start
all programs
accessories
communications
new connection wizard
next
connect to the internet
next
set up my connection manually
next
connect using a broadband connection that is always on
Finish

I hope this post is helpful, let us know how it works ºut.

Hi Engel,
Appreciate the help but no change. I almost thought you have it because the
wizard indicated Dial-up; I change to your recommendation - tried it - still
N.G.; tried re-booting - still N.G.
I spoke with a friend who is also on Verizon DSL and he has same problem.
Contacted Verizon support - there is no Firewall to block it.
Thanks again for trying.
Any and all suggestions and help welcomed.

Thanks for trying Engel! Still looking for suggestions from anyone!
Can I ask another question?? What is the small window
titled"gcasDtDervHolder" that appears on my desktop lately; it has three
small bullseyes and five overlapping "systray..." buttons??? They don't seem
to perform any function.
Thanks again!

Hi plun!
No - I'm not. Using McAfee Anti-Virus (No McAfee Firewall - and only their
Anti-virus.

The Windows firewall should not interfere with Microsoft Antispyware
updates--no configuration is needed--contrary to the advice in Help.

I'm also on Verizon DSL, and I'm an MSN customer as well, although I don't
generally run MSN software on my machine. Did you make changes to your
antivirus suite before this problem arose?

The appearance of that window is a bug--it is supposed to be
"hidden"--beyond the normal screen coordinates. It will be fixed in beta2.
Some change to your system--perhaps a video driver update? may have allowed
this window to show.

Hi Bill,
By anti-virus suite are your referring to McAfee? No - I didn't change
anything. I installed the Verizon Software and then the MSN software
following all recommended steps. (McAfee has been my anti-virus for several
years and not the McAfee offrered by MSN)
As mentioned earlier, the only thing I did after coming up on DSL was to go
thru the MS Windows updates (about 48 of them - following Microsoft
procedures step-by-step) that I resisted doing until I could get ServPack 2
which was impossible on dial-up.
Appreciate your help!

Hi again,
What are the Signs Your Computer is Infected with Spyware?
Below are five signs that your computer might be infected with spyware:

1. Your Web browser's homepage is reset to an undesirable Web site and you
cannot change it back.

2. You are experiencing problems with pop-up advertisements both when you
are browsing the Internet and when you are offline and your Internet browser
is closed.

3. Your computer is running slower then normal and your connection to the
Internet is not as fast as it used to be. You might also be experiencing
abnormal network activity coming from your modem or broadband connection
device (cable or DSL modem).

4. When you are using your favorite search engine your searches are being
redirected to an unfamiliar search engine or unrelated Web site.

5. You notice strange additions to your Favorites list or you have a Start
menu item that you never added.

I was reading the Help file, and i came across the above.

What make me thinkng, have you try diferents antivirus scans on line also
anti spyware ect. Give a try, only for a peace of mind.

This is what cross my mind.

So far, nothing's coming to mind. They symptom you are seeing typically
relates to a firewall in place. However, it can be caused by any break in
connectivity between the client software and the server, including no
connection to the Internet, servers down, for example. So there's a broad
range of possible issues.

You seem pretty clear that nothing in the McAfee software you are running
involves a firewall--so let me try to get back to you later today with some
further ideas.

I had the same problem right from the dial up connection box opening up on
my son's PC. I followed this string and made the same progress as you ie no
dial up box but no update. I have now however got it working, so guys thanks
for pointing me in the right direction. I have Norton Internet security and
connect from this PC on a home wireless broadband connection. Following the
last recomendation to look at the firewall I went into the norton firewall
and under the add programme tab added Microsoft Antispyware,
GIANTantispywareupdater, it now works fine. Good luck.

Hi Engel,
No signs of a Spyware invasion on the computer. Everything working fine
except MS Anti-spyware Updates. When ever I try to update it comes back with
"Cannot connect to the Internet". Recap - Everything was working fine until
I went off dial-up and onto Verizon DSL w/MSN Premium; also, updated Windows
with about 48 updates including Service Pack 2. No problems with any
existing software or accessing anything else on the Internet.
Thanks and I appreciate your help.

Hi David,
Thanks for the reply! Despite Verizon and MSN telling me they don't have a
Firewall unless I pay extra for it, I'm gonna try searching deeper to see if
there is.
In the meantime, I still welcome all suggestions and help any of you have to
offer.
I'll keep checking the forum for any advice.
Thanks,
Gary
