Cannot get rid of error 39

I noticed that my scanner had the dreaded yellow exclamation mark next
to it in device manager.

Cutting a long story short, I can install the scanner on my other PCs
but not my main one. I have therefore tested the cables and the
hardware. I am using the same driver in all my tests so the problem
must be something in/on my main PC.

I had a browse through the registry and cleaned out what I could
relating to my scanner and deleted any files left behind by the
uninstall.

Any ideas how I can install the hardware on the PC of my choosing?

TIA.

Any ideas how I can install the hardware on the PC of my choosing?

An update...I am now convinced that the problem is that WinXP itself
does not recognise that my scanner is connected. All my other USB
devices work fine and another (third party) driver - VueScan says that
I don't have a scanner connected when I do.

Something may be broken down in the guts of XP...a repair install may
be needed unless somebody here knows how scanner detection (twain?)
works.

I have been on to Epson tech support and all seems well from their
end. Twain file versions all check out (>1.7.0.0).

TIA.

If you did an Add/Remove Programs on your scanner, more than likely all that
did was remove the software support ... many hardware devices seem to leave
leftovers in the registry in support of there drivers.

Try right-click in Device Manager on your Scanner entry with the yellow
mark, and click on Uninstall.
Then reboot.

If the hardware is still connected, Windows XP will try and re-install after
detecting new hardware.

Done exactly that soooo many times today. As I said, the problem seems
to be with XP thinking my scanner is not connected 100%...finds it
well enough to get the drivers to install, but not enough to them to
correctly install.

Thanks, but it is not a USB problem per se, all my other USB devices
(5) are working just fine.

Sorry, I actually meant to post this link. This site has specific
patches for scanners, chipsets, etc. It mentions WinME but is actually
the XP page. Press Ctrl/F and do a Find for "scanner" or your specific
brand. Also search for your mobo, etc..

Thanks for the link. trouble is, everything has been working 110% for
months. Bloody computers <g>!

Here's the solution, many thanks to all who responded.

Googled for the problem, found this
http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=cameras&message.id=4670
which provided the fix.

Previously, I had only heard about CD/DVD drives being affected. So
there seems to be a common thread...if a known good piece of hardware
won't install, it's likely to be an Upper and/or Lower filter problem.

Victory over Windows is worth the ten hours of this weekend that I've
pissed away on this issue, but I WON.
